I started having an issue with Outlook 2003 about 2 months ago. I had set up a few different pop accounts as well as my hotmail account to be checked using Outlook and all of a sudden one day I can no longer send through any of the pop accounts using Outlook. I can still send using hotmail through Outlook, and of course I can log in to the webmail sites for these pop accounts and send mail. I've checked with my ISP (Comcast) and they are not blocking anything, and I've checked my routers to make sure they are not blocking anything either. I can recieve mail just fine. I have removed these pop accounts and then set them up again a couple of times. I tried to use my Office setup CD to repair Outlook, but it came up with an error (I do not remember which one). My brother then gave me Office 2007. When I tried to upgrade, the installation failed with a Error 1935. So, I uninstalled Office 2003 completely and then tried to install Office 2007. I got an Error 2908 first and then the same Error 1935. So, now I don't have any version of Office on my computer and am unable to work from home because I really need to access the PST files. Here's the header from HJT: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 1:48:05 AM, on 5/17/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16441) I really hope this is a fixable problem... Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Sorry to hear of the problems with email and Outlook.
I think it would be best to do the following:
1 Check that your anti virus is not preventing the sending of email
2 Check your firewall (especially 2 way software firewall) is not blocking outgoing mail
3 Open Outlook Express (not Outlook) and set up a POP3 account and see if this will send/receive (send message to yourself to check)
4 (I know this is not what you want but it will narrow down the search for the culprit!)
5 Uninstall all versions of Microsoft Office** completely (back up/archive all your important stuff first) Reboot
6 Run the Microsoft Office uninstaller tools* AFTER you have uninstalled using the normal method) Reboot
7 Run the Microsoft Installer clean up tool* Reboot
8 Do a disc clean up delete temp files/cache etc ATF-Cleaner by Atribune is good Reboot
9 Install Microsoft office again

** I am assuming that you are not referring to the Beta version of Office 2007?

Hi there! Sorry it took me so long to respond back to you... Been busy... I followed your instructions completely, and then tried to install Office 2007, but still was unsuccessful. While I was at my parent's house last weekend, I had my brother take a look at it. They have cable internet through a different provider than I have (they have Cox and I have Comcast). Since I was having issues sending through my Comcast account using even Outlook Express, my brother set up his Cox account through my Outlook Ezpress, and it WAS able to send messages! He also set up my Gmail account in OE and it was also able to send messages. So, what he has suggested is that I get an external HD and transfer everything I want to keep onto it and then burn this HD and start all over. But when I resisted the idea, he also suggested that I try installing / repairing Windows XP Media Center Edition on top of my current installation to see if that fixes the issue, so I don't lose any files and don't have to transfer anything. Before I do anything, we both wanted to get your opinion first, though... What do you think?

Hi, I like your brothers's approach!

But before you do anything too drastic check and double check again with your ISP that the problem is not at "their end" Tiscali have had mega problems in the past month or so with their outgoing email servers and Orange have had their problems too. However if I read you right your brother can use your computer's OE settings and successfully send emails via his ISP, if this is the case then you really need to put a bit of pressure on your ISP and get them to go over each of your settings with them ( at least then they can't say its your email client or other settings that are incorrectly configured!
Heres a link to another chap who is having similar problems and posted recently, perhaps using your ISPs IP address may help? It worked for him and for a few others!

Hi there! After I wrote that last post of mine, I tested to see if I could send and receive mail via my Comcast accounts in OE, and I could! I have not tried my work POP accounts yet, because I have forgotten the servers to set up the account. I'll get those tomorrow and plug them in to test if I can send and receive through those accounts, and if so, maybe this means that the sending problem is fixed, but the Office installation issue still needs help. I also read the posts and replies of the thread you sent to me... Interesting, but I don't think that's the problem with me because when I'm not at home and at my office (about 1/2 a mile away from my house) I have no issues sending and receiving through all accounts (Comcast, work accounts, Hotmail, etc.) using Outlook on that puter. I'll keep you posted! Thanks!

OK, I got the servers for my work accounts and plugged them in, but now when I try to send through them, I get a 550 error message, Relay not permitted. I remember getting this before, when I very first set up my email client at home to send and receive through my work accounts, but I cannot remember the solution. Do you happen to know how to fix this issue?

Hi,
Tricky one.... as there could be a number of reasons.
here's an extract from a forum post that might help:

Relay is not permitted. Either smtp relay has been disabled completely or has been
changed to require smtp auth or the auth you're using is no longer valid
on the mail server due to a removed user acct or a changed password...
It could be any number of exact issues really, but the bottom line is
that the smtp server through which you are attempting to relay your
messages is not allowing you to relay mail through it.

Here's the link where this appeared:

http://www.houseoffu.../threadid:46773

It's probably time to contact your works system Administrator/ISP to see if someone has shut down the relay either inadvertantly or as part of the work's general security/ITC policy.

OK, so I finally figured it out! I had to change the smtp server name so that I could connect remotely. Now, I finally have Outlook Express working exactly as it should. I am now able to send AND receive mail through ALL of my accounts, including my Comcast accounts, my work accounts, my Gmail and my Hotmail accounts. So, now I have established that there are no issues with my laptop, my routers, my ISP, or any of my email accounts. The issue was with Outlook, and is still with Office, as I am still unable to install Office 2007. I also tried to install only Outlook 2007 and then tried to install only Word 2007, and every time, I get the same error message 1935. Phew! So, where do we go from here?

Hi Well done on getting back on air, glad your email is working OK now. If its just the problem with Office now, then the usual answer is to correctly: Uninstall...Clean Up...Remove any registry entries remaining and then reinstall as set out in my previous posts. If you are still unable to get a good install having done this all again (from a reboot) then probably your previous uninstalls were not 100% effective and despite using the automated tools the remnants have not been completely removed. (Did you for example disable your anti virus etc and follow the usual recommendations before trying the reinstall procedures? You may need to find every reference in the registry to the previous installations ...quite a job!, (make a back up of your registry before you do anything else and set up a System Restore Point.) If you are not expert in using regedit then it is recommended that you do NOT go down the route of manually finding and fixing each and every reference. You didn't say if a version of Office you installed previously was a Beta? Regards paws
