Hi, ive just sign up to this fourm, because im unsure about a problem im having

Here is what is going on:

About 4 hours ago i was browsing my C:\windows folder and a popup from Zonealarm came, it said i had two viruses on my computer and it could not do anything about it.

The viruses are:
Win32/Doklin!generic, two infected files:

C:\windows\#######.exe (note, the # refer to some random number, i cant quite remember what it was)
C:\windows\service32.exe

I searched google for Doklin!generic removal and found your page here:
http://forums.tomcoy...ric_t77923.html

This page looked like the same problem i am having, so i read through it all, and followed all the instructions, until i get to the bit where it says find C:\windows\service32.exe and delete it.
Well ive looked for it, but its not there, nor is the other infected file the #######.exe one. Ive got the folders to show all hidden and system files.

Ive downloaded all the windows updates bar service pack 2, i did the backup of the registry and the fix.reg part. I also just before i posted this new topic, did a virus scan (with Zonealarm) of the C:\windows folder, i did not find the two infected viruses, i did find an unrelated virus but Zonealarm fixed that. My Zonealarm Security Suite is fully updated.

What i need to know is are the viruses gone, and if they are how did they get deleted/fixed?
Also, i would like to know if it is ok to download and install service pack 2, because reading that other topic the guy said not to download it, im not too sure why.

Any help would be great,
Thanks for your time.

Ok, first off I know it says "Please DO NOT bump your log." Though it also says "Slyware Seniors, Slyware Warriors, Experts, Etc.. Please work the logs from the oldest to the newest...", this dosent seem to be the case though, as ive seen brand new posters replyed to on the same day. Anyway, im not one to complain, and if i have to wait longer then so be it.

My above post, was about the Doklin!generic virus that was on my system, it seems to have vanished now, but im not too sure. While i have been waiting, ive done a full system scan with Ad-Aware SE, and got rid of some Spyware, also done a Virus scan with Zonealarm Security Suite and killed another virus, not the Doklin!generic one though. I also downloaded SpyEraser from:
http://www.liutiliti...ucts/spyeraser/
it looked like a great program, so i installed it and let it run. Five hours (yes 5 hours!) later it had finished and found 46 infections, BUT i had to register first (pay money) before it could clean the infections off, now i wasnt about to use my credit cards over the internet with an infected computer, so basically i wasted five hours of my day for nothing. That program has now been trashed.
Ive researched all my startup programs in MSCONFIG at this site:
http://www.bleepingc...r.com/startups/
and while doing so, have found some entries in MSCONFIG that have been idenitified as trojans:
timed & winstall
i have looked for these programs, but have been unable to find them, so perhaps they are gone, but i dont know why they are still listed in the startup tab of MSCONFIG

My computer seems to be running fine, but im still not too sure that it is completely clean, ill post the HJT log with this post please reply whenever you are able,

Thanks for your time

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay in responding :( I'd like you to go into msconfig and put a check by everything. DO NOT reboot when it ask you to. Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Now you can go back into msconfig and uncheck those again. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi, thanks for responding.

My computer seems to be running fine, although has some slow downs now and then, i think this has to do with the 512mb of ram though. Also sometimes i cannot connect to the internet on the first go, eg. Im using DSL through a wireless router, when i plug in my wireless adapter to this computer, the icon on the taskbar displays that im connected but when i check the connection through Zonealarm, there is no connection to the internet. So i unplug the adapter, then connect it again, and i gain access to the internet, I have no idea what is causing this, but it is only a minor inconvience.

Ive done as you said and re-enabled all the startup items and did the scan, heres the log:

Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\runservice.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

I'd really suggest you update to XP2

You can remove any programs I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D
