Dear Gurus,

My Gateway CX2620 Tablet PC has slow down its performance. I noticed that the CPU usage is jumping from 2-5% up to 35% every 10 secs for no apparent reason -nothing else running. This started to happen after I updated to the new McAffee Security Center yesterday. Before then, I never noticed the sand clock as I see it now when I click on the screen. I have even uninstalled all McAffee programs with no change.

I run both Spybot and Adware and fixed anything that was shown there with no change in this behavior.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

(The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.)

Afterwards, run HijackThis from its new location and post a new log here. Thanks!

Thanks for your help.

I opened a new holder at c:/HJT/ and copied HijackThis.exe into that folder.

However I copied a copy of HijackThis.exe from another computer as I could not find the original HijackThis.exe that run the previous LOG file. I hope that is OK.

Otherwise, please let me know how to locate it.

Please notice that I still have some McAffe executables running even though I uninstalled the McAffe application. When I re-installed (and un-installed), I got a message saying that some files were missing.

I noticed from your log that you're also infected with WildTangent, so, while you're in Add/Remove Programs, please uninstall (if present): WildTangent.

If McAfee.com isn't in the list (and it probably won't be), we'll have to manually remove the McAfee.com files.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

* Highlight all the files with the complete path in the quote and press Ctrl+C on your keyboard.

Ok, we're almost finished. We have one tiny fragment of McAfee hanging on, so let's get it out of there.

We need to open the Services console.

- Click Start > Run.
- Type in services.msc.
- Scroll down until you see McAfee Personal Firewall Service
- Right click it and choose Properties.
- Make sure you're on the General tab.
- If the service is running, click the Stop button.
- Change the Startup Type to Disabled.
- Click OK.
- Close the Services console.

Next, run HijackThis and fix the following entry:

Update Windows
Keeping Windows updated is essential -- malware developers will often reverse-engineer updates from MS in order to infect users who *didn't* update! Using Internet Explorer, navigate to Windows%20Update%5b/url%5d%20and%20let%20that%20site%20upgrade%20your%20computer.%20%20

Reset%20and%20Re-enable%20System%20Restore
Reset%20and%20re-enable%20your%20System%20Restore%20to%20remove%20infected%20files%20that%20have%20been%20backed%20up%20by%20Windows.%20The%20files%20in%20System%20Restore%20are%20protected%20to%20prevent%20any%20programs%20changing%20those%20files.%20This%20is%20the%20only%20way%20to%20clean%20these%20files:%20(You%20will%20lose%20all%20previous%20restore%20points%20which%20may%20be%20infected%20anyway).

Adaware 1.06
Ad-Aware 1.06 is another great Spyware removal tool. It's important to give yourself layered protection against Spyware, so I recommend both Spybot S&D AND Ad-Aware 1.06. You can download Ad-Aware 1.06 here for free.

SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster, free from JavaCool, inserts hundreds of known bad sites into Internet Explorer's Restricted Zone, meaning that attempted infections from those sites will be thwarted. I'd recommend you download it from JavaCool's website and install it. Make sure to check for updates periodically.

Firewall Protection
A firewall is essential to keep unwanted information from coming into your computer AND for keeping information from leaving your computer unexpectedly. A good one is available for free from Sun-belt Software called Kerio, downloadable here. Another good firewall is Zone Alarm, which can be downloaded here. Either one is fine, but only run one at any given time to avoid conflicts.

System Clean-up
I recommend getting a program that will go through your system and delete old cookies, temporary files and bad registry entries to keep your computer running in tip-top shape. My favorite is called CCleaner and you can download it for free here.

Virus Protection
There are lots of great virus protection programs out there. My favorite one is from Avast, which you can download here for free. Others are fine too, just make sure you don't have more than one running at any given time, as they will cause conflicts with one another.

Hi Ben, Thanks for helping me to clean the computer, and get rid of the spyware and virus. However I still have the same problem. Something runs in my PC evry 10 secs and creates a spike in CPU usage from 2-5% to 35% for no apparent reason. When I run it in safe mode, the CPU usage is flat and almost 0%. I check with other computers and this is not a normal behavior. What do you think? Jorge

This definitely isn't normal behavior.

Let's take a look in the registry and see exactly what's set to startup.

Please open Notepad (Start > Run > type Notepad)and copy and paste this text in it:

Click on File, Save As and name this file look.bat . In the Save As Type dropdown box, choose All Files. For your convenience, I'd recommend saving the file on your Desktop.
