Yep! That's what I was looking for.
With that information, we will be able to recommend several applications that can be safely disabled via MSCONFIG
(or you can use your new CodeStuff Starter utility to disable them)

But First……….

We need just a bit more information.

Let's find out if you have any other possibly problematic items already disabled with selective start-up.
Go to Start >Run and (type) "Notepad" without the quotes
Copy/paste the following blue text (blue text appears below) into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is unchecked.
Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad file and Save as:

* Name the file mslook.bat
* Save as Type: All files (not as a text document or it won't work)
* Select the desktop icon on the left to save it on the desktop.

Locate mslook.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your next reply.
When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

regedit /a /e %systemdrive%\regkey.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig"
notepad %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
del /q %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
Dough Again, hope this is what you want REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\services] "gusvc"=dword:00000003 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\state] "system.ini"=dword:00000000 "win.ini"=dword:00000000 "bootini"=dword:00000000 "services"=dword:00000002 "startup"=dword:00000000 Thanks nelclaret
Dough Update on problem. Just to give you an idea of what is happening currently. Here is a summary of my attempts to open the PC this time. 1 opened up - froze as I was going into my emails (about 2 mins in) 2 opened up - froze on Desktop almost at once 3 opened up - then I immediately closed down (to do a 'proper' closedown) 4 opened up - froze on the welcome screen 5opened up - froze on desk top with a few random purple graphic blocks 5 opened up - some purple writng on the pre-windows screen - froze on a black screen with an egg-timer 6 opened up - froze half-way through the 'welcome music' which cut out. 7 opened up and I closed down 8 - opened up and have got this far. Hurrah! (done from memory so might not necessarily be in the correct sequence) Once running ( as now) there seems a definate improvement in performance but obviously still something amiss. One other thing I have noticed is that whenI have a freeze if I try to do a re-set immediately I get a succesion of alarm type beeps - something I have not had before. Likewise If I try to boot up without giving sufficient 'resting' time (in the past it just wouldn't start - the two lights on the box glowed and I would have to wait a little longer - but no 'alarm beeps') I don't know if there is anything suggestive to you in the above but I thought some detail might prove helpful. Best wishes Nelclaret
Hi Nelclaret,

Disable the following items via MSCONFIG - StartUp(tab)
Start - Run - (type)MSCONFIG - Enter - Select the StartUP(tab)
Remove the checkmark/tick from in front of the following items:

You should now only have your AVG AntiVirus Running Active in MSCONFIG STartUP.

'alarm beeps')
I don't know if there is anything suggestive to you in the above but I thought some detail might prove helpful.

What you have accomplished by "disabling" the items via MSCONFIG -StartUp(tab) is to reduce the amount of applications and processes that are all trying to Start all at once when you boot your machine.

Many of the items that you just "disabled" would themselves attempt to access the internet to check for updates.
(none of the updates related to the items that you just disabled are particularly significant or useful)
(Just a bunch of checking and not a lot of beneficial updating)
________________

On the other hand, AVG "will" check for and download an important update (one time daily) the first time you turn your machine on each day. AVG shows the progress of downloading and updating its antivirus files. You may or may not be able to continue other work while AVG is downloading and updating. It is better to pause in your work when you notice AVG doing its automatic download/update thing.

Sometimes people turn on their computer, and then begin "using it" before everything is fully loaded.
Starting to use the machine too quickly, can cause "lag" and crashes.

That "sounds like" what may be happening in your case.
___________

A couple of additional considerations:

Heat:
How long has it been since you opened up the tower case, to blow out the dust-bunnies?

Video Adapter Driver:
This is the Video Adapter Driver for your GeForce 4:
93.71_forceware_winXP2K_English_whql.exe

You can download it from
http://www.Download.nvidia.com

You'll be asked to "register"
Then you'll be asked to accept the "terms of use"
Then you'll be presented with three dialogue boxes in sequence.
In the first box, Select: Graphic Driver
In the second box Select: Geforce 4 series
In the third box, Select: Windows XP/2000
____________

Do you need to download and install your Video Driver? Should you do so?
I really don't know………. But
You are only getting about 59MP/s from your Video Disply.
Your GeForce 440 should be getting somewhere in the range of 90-112MP/s

So, Yes.

Additionally, the other "freezing" type difficulties you've been experiencing, "can" relate to corrupted Video Adapter Driver.
_______________

Power Supply Unit (PSU)

Your PSU is "probably" just fine.
But since one period of greatest demand on PSU is at boot - StartUp, it should be considered.
At boot - Startup, all the capacitors are charging up, the RAM sticks are "pre-heating", the CPU is working very hard to get all the processes and features loaded, and the hard drive is accessing more read/write cycles than at most other times of computer useage.

Fortunately, you can get a good "overview" of your PSU functioning with a wonderful (free) utility called Everest
Download Everest 2.20 here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Allow Everest to install (you don't need to allow it to create a StartUp item, just a Desktop Icon)
Click on the Everest Icon to run it.

Click on the item:
Motherboard - Sensors

Use File - Create a Quick Report (to create a text file of your voltages and temperatures from the Sensors panel)
You can then copy/paste that Quick Report into your next Reply, for review.

Let us know how you are progressing.

Best Regards
Hello Dough

1) I have disabled the start-up programs as recommended

2) I have installed the NVIDIA drivers

3) I have, not yet, cleaned out the 'dust bunnies' as I thought it may be best to have a before and after EVEREST report.

Here is the report - I hope it is what you were after.

Still had trouble booting up after I had disabled the start-up programs. (2 freeze-ups ), Consequently I am posting this BEFORE trying a start-up after the new NVIDIA Driver was installed (although it seems OK after the auto re-boot!)

Many thanks for your endevours.

By the way - latest open up attempt ended with a violent zig-zaggy pattern on screen (Don't know the sequence as I left the room to get a coffee.) Opened up again (this one) and got a 'recovery from serious error message'. Do you want any of these serious error messages saved (2nd time this has happened!)

You have the patience of a saint, sir, with people like me!

(Booting up is currently a mysterious journey…)
Hi Nelclaret,

Sorry to hear that you are still having a "mysterious journey".
______________

Those temperatures are all too high.

Particularly the CPU and Aux.

There can be a variety of causes for such High temperatures.

Most frequent include:
Clogged airflow, failed case and CPU Fans, dustbunnies clogging the HeatSink of the CPU and other Heatsinks
__________

It is remotely possible that the CPU Heatsink is not correctly "seated" or that there is no "seating compound" applied to facilitate the best heat transfer.

You "wouldn't know" without going through the mechanical procedure of releasing the HeatSink pressure clips and physically examining the surface between the CPU and the HeatSink.

"Loose Clips" that should be securing the HeatSink, can be identified via visual inspection without mechanically changing anything.
_______________

Start by getting a Can of Compressed Air to carefully blow out the dustbunnies and remove any cloggs from airflow.

Inspect to be sure that all of the Fans are running vigorously.
___________

Are you familiar with electric and static electricity precautions necessary to take into consideration when working inside of the Computer Tower?

If not. Or if you are uncomfortable working inside the case tower, then you might want to consider having a local repair shop help you.
___________

Some people have expressed "amazement" that "Heat" can be a problem when the user has only just booted up the machine.
As in: "How could the CPU be overheated so quickly?"

Just believe me. CPUs process alot of electricity "immediately" upon boot, and throw off a ton of heat.
Unless the HeatSink and Fans are doing there job correctly, the CPU can "rapidly" overheat.

The result of an overheated CPU is that it actually processes the electric "off-on-off-on bursts", incorrectly.
Such incorrect CPU function can affect "any" other function of the machine.

CPU 124*C — 255*F —– Is one of the Hottest overheated CPUs that I've ever seen!

Keep us informed with your progress.

Doug
Hi Dough Desperately quick post to try and beet freeze. Everest sensor run shows remperature fluctuating wildly from 1 degree up the scale and back again as I watch. Is this normal? Could we be getting spurious result? Will get compressed air for cleaning and will post here asap Nelclaret
Hi nelclaret, Everest is not the only tool that can monitor voltages and temperatures, just one of the easiest to use. All voltage/temperature monitoring tools "depend" on the actual physical sensors that that may/or may not have been installed by the machine manufacturer. Many computers built for general use have only a few very rudimentary sensors and little-to-no circuitry designed to provide easy access to voltage and temperature readings. Seems the computer makers don't really trust the ordinary user to make decisions about the basic functioning of their machine. I suppose there is some merit in their caution, since "over-clocking" is popular amongst many gamers who are constantly trying to get the most out of their machines. Actual attempts to modify voltages and clock-speed CPU, RAM, and Video Card "cycles" can increase machine speed/functioning, but there is always the potential for pushing too far and causing the machine to become unstable, or to overstress various components, resulting in burnout. Computer manufacturers don't want gamers pushing the machine to the max, burning it out, and then trying to return it to the manufacturer for warranty replacement. So they just don't provide much in the way of sensor information. Some machines do provide sensor information for voltages, cycles, and temperatures via displays in the BIOS/CMOS. I don't really think yours is one of those machines, but you can take a look in BIOS to see if any such info is available for comparison to your Everest readouts. One way or the other, all you will be doing is cleaning out the dustbunnies to improve cooling. <– always a good thing. Better to take your readings from Everest seriously (if not precisely) and error on the safe side. :)
Dough Again, racing against time before getting frozen. Cleaned out PC as described. On reconnecting and powering up I was unable to connect wireless mouse which looks dead. USB mouse seems to work OK. Getting frozen on internet and when x-ing out to desktop all icons disabled including closedown so reboot only answer. Miracle if this message gets through as I've tried about a dozen times in the last day or so but cursor 'flutters' and then hangs. If this gets through I'll try and post a more coherent reply. Nelclaret
Hi Dough Further to my previous post (which I hadn't realised had got through!) I am writing this on my daughter's laptop -which I only have intermittent access to. The latest position is as follows (excuse minuteae/repetition but I don't know whether you will see any significance) PC cleaned out as suggested. On re-connecting it appears that my wireless mouse cannot connect with the receiver (although the keyboard is OK). I had to connect a USB mouse. (Any significance for freezing?). The desktop functions fine - so I can look at my documents, settings etc. MAJOR problem on entering internet however. The system hangs whenever I try to move from page to page ( for example, it hung when I submitted the previous post to you). This is not an intermittent fault but happens 100%. On x-ing out back to keyboard (I get a non responding message) all Icons are non-functioning - including turn-off functions, so one can only turn the power off at this juncture. Again this is 100%. I have tried system restore - no go. On looking at the event log (which I can do once re-booted) there is a consistent 'application hang' which relates to IE7. This morning I was convinced I would have to take it in for surgery (but worried about cowboys!). Thinking about it the thing works fine provided I don't go into the internet then whammo as above. I thought I would give you another shot as it may be something and nothing although I am beginning to doubt it. I would rather send Tom Coyote a bigger donation in any event! Sorry for the length of the post. Bear in mind I may be able to read a reply but posting a reply of my own may be problematic. Once again, many thanks for your time. Regards Nelclaret
How was the dust-bunnie condition?

Now that you have cleaned out the dust bunnies, let's have another look at a "quick report" of Sensors, using your Everest.
Hopefully the Temperatures have been significantly reduced.
__________

Since you installed the updated Video Adapter Driver, I'd like to see another Pit Test. (when you can get on the Internet)
__________

Stay with the USB mouse for the time being.

Wireless mouse trouble can indicate:
Batteries dead
Sensor not correctly plugged into USB port
USB port device driver corruption
____________

The type of problems that you are presently experiencing (if heat problem has been resolved) can relate to:
1. Hard Drive disk file structure corruption (bad-clusters)
2. Windows Operating System Files missing or corrupted
3. Device Driver corruption

We'll take these in order, as above. (print out a copy of these instructions, since your will be off-line during most of this work.)

Hard Drive Disk file structure
GoTo:
Start - Run - (type)chkdsk /f /r <– there is a space before "/f" and before "/r"
You will be warned that CHECKDISK cannot be run at this time due to inability to lock files or files in use.
That's OK.
You will be invited to allow CHECKDISK to Run the next time you boot your machine. That's good.
Reply in the affirmative, with "Y" for yes, or click OK (whichever affirmative option is displayed)
Reboot your machine.
CHECKDISK will run a battery of 5 separate scans, looking for different type items, and making any needed repairs.
The "chkdsk /f /r" process takes between 20 and 40 minutes depending on size of Hard Drive, and number of detected errors to correct.
CHECKDISK "does not" display a Report.
Instead, it alerts during the scan process, indicating that a "bad-cluster" has been identified and a file is being moved to a safe location on the hard drive.

It's "tedious", but it is important to run "chkdsk /f /r" multiple times (if errors are detected) until CHECKDISK completes its entire scan without detecting any errors. Please Run chkdsk /f /r a second and even third time if necessary.
___________

Windows Operating System missing or corrupted files
GoTo:
Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow - Enter <– notice that there is a space between "c" and "/"
A black DOS window will display briefly and then disappear
The Windows File Protection progress bar will then be displayed.
System File Checker (sfc) takes about 20-30 minutes to complete its scan.
If SFC terminates within 2 or 3 minutes, then it did not complete its scan.
SFC may ask you to insert your XP installation CD if it finds a missing or corrupted file that it needs to Replace.

Let us know if you do or do not have XP Installation CD.
There are some workarounds if you don't have the CD.

Device Driver Problems
Some of your other problems, including failure to connect to internet may also relate to Device Drivers.
GoTo:
Right-Click on My Computer - Select - Hardware(tab) - Click on Device Manager

You will see a listing of your machine's devices.
Please Click on the + mark in front of each device item to "expand" and view the Driver information.
*** You are looking for any "yellow" or "Red" warning signs
If warning signs are present, the best route to take is to:
Right-Click on the Device
Select - Remove/uninstall
Reboot
(to allow Windows to "find new hardware" and "install driver for new hardware")

Complete the above for each Device separately (if yellow or red warning is present) with reboot between work on each Device.
_____________

The Event Viewer error code 7000 suggests a few Services related problems, in which a Service has been disabled or the related files have been removed/corrupted or not configured correctly.

The "other" error codes that you have experience (but not yet related in your posts) may also indicate specific problems with Services.

Hopefully, the (3) corrective procedures above will have resolved File Structure, Operating System, and Device Driver problems and thereby "automatically" corrected the cause of any errors that you have previously observed in Event Viewer.

If not, it may be necessary to complete a Repair Installation of your XP operating system.

In your next post - Let us know about:
1. Heat
2. Video Driver (if you can get on the internet to run a Pit Test)
3. Completion of chkdsk /f /r
4. Completion of SFC Windows File Protection System File Checker
5. Device Driver Status - Which Devices did show warnings and were they successfully resolved in the above instructions.
