You did well :thumbup: Thats the culprit, you have a Smitfraud Infection. What we need to do now is to run the fix, this time use Option #2.

Do it this way……..

Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

  • Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart into normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt


Reboot normally.
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
  • Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.


When your done, I need you to download and install this free system cleaner ,

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up



Post the log from Smitfraud and a New3 HJT log please

These are all the reports after I used Smitfraud Fix, HJT and ATF Cleaner, hope this will finally fix it all, thank you for so much help, I live way out in the country and if I don't learn how to do things myself it is very difficult to get the help I need. Thanks again.

Kelia64 :D From what I can see of your Hijackthis log it looks fine but I need to see a complete log like you have posted before. How are the pop ups now, are they gone??

No more pop up so far, here is the latest HJT report which I just ran. When I read the HJT reports I am not sure what to do with the entries. I ran Spy Bot ant there were only 2 entries whichis very uusual. I was happy.

Your log looks clean :thumbup: but I want to make sure these files are gone so they don't come back to haunt you. I want you to download and install a program called Killbox, if these files are still present Killbox will remove them. Its a real simple program to run and only takes a few minutes. Make sure you read what I am posting and follow the instructions closely. By highlighting the files I am talking about dragging your mouse over them all together until they all turn blue and then press the Control Key and then the C key on your keyboard and those files will be copied to the windows clipboard. Then follow the rest of the instructions.


Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop.

Highlight all the files with the complete path inside the quote and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\AlxRes.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\AlxTB1.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\linkprd.exe

  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure ALL Files is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.


Let me know how it went. This should be it, when you post back I will provide links for you for free programs for you to install to help keep you more secure.

I did the Killbox maneuver and it went off with no problem. I can't wait to get your suggestion for better protection for the computer. I use this with 2 teenage boys and I think some of this stuff comes from links they go to but I guess they are able to hijack from any place. Thanks again for your help. I am so happy not to be hijacked off to some weird site every time I am on line. Which browser do you think is best. We have IE but don't use it often we usuually use Opera or Firefox. Do you have a preference ?

maybe it didn't go alright, I din't see any files come up to highlight I just did the steps that killbox was showing do I need to do it again if so where would the files that you wanted highlighted show up?

Don't click on that link, its a trojan in itself.

Do this.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Then boot into Safemode.



Click on My Computer to open it.
Click on your C: Drive
Then double click on your Windows folder
Then double click on your system32 folder
The first part are all folders, bypass those and scroll to the files, they will all be alphabetical.
Locate these three files, right click on each one and click on Delete

AlxRes.dll
AlxTB1.dll
linkprd.exe


Reboot normally , what your describing is most likely a Vundo infection so lets run the tool

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

I went into the system 32 and the following files were not there:AlxRes.dll AlxTB1.dll linkprd.exe Should I go ahead to download and run the Vundo Fix? One of the hijackers that keeps coming up is called Generous Genie.com Do you recognize that?

It is one of the ones that always pops up and hijacks the web page I just delete it is that good enough? If we get everything cleaned up do you think that will get rid of them too?

Your log looks fine but if you are getting unwanted webpages and if that warning pops up then there has to be something bad on your system. Just closing a bad page will not stop it from coming back. You have to realize that I am on a computer most likely 1000s of miles away from you and I can only go by the reports you post and the feedback you give me. Even if a report you think shows nothing, I still need to see them because there may be something in there pointing to an infection or something amiss on your system.

You have AVG Anti Spyware installed, I need you to run it again in safemode , I will post the instructions again, I need you to have it Remove or Quarantine whatever it finds, NOT SET TO TAKE NO ACTION. The bad files it found that I wanted you to remove would be gone now if you had it set correctly. When the scan is finished, go to the reports tab and on the bottom there is a option to Save report, save it to your desktop then open it and copy and paste the report for me to see.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Try your best and post the AVG report for me to see.
