Hi,

Got your details from micro mart mag in the UK and their security features issue.

I am running windows 2000 Pro SP4 and the following security & tune up programes that I scan or tune system with weekly, yet have a few issues developed in last month and hope you can help
All these have been running fine until the last month.
Mcafee firewall
F Secure anti virus 2006 with IE shield
Spybot S & D
Spyware doctor 2006
System mechanic 6 pro 2006
Registry mechanic
Max registry cleaner

System is now freezing in IE 6 for up to 10 seconds along with additional IE windows opening that I don't open, like world wild life fund? etc. Cursor blinks rapidly in IE sometimes.

System mechanic now stops working when running total care, comprehensive care, pc clean up tool, running removing internet cache files and will sit there, I left it an hour with 5% completed and it doesn't progress. It used to run the whole of total care comprehenive in around 30 - 45 mins.

Here is the first log hope I have followed your instructions correctly, any help would be much appreciated.

rockbiker :D

Welcome to the forum. I am not looking at anything real serious on your HJT log but what I am looking at is that you have TWO ANTI VIRUS PROGAMS RUNNING This is not a good thing and may be the root of your problem. With AV Software......More is not better They will consume huge amounts of system resources and bang heads with each other and cause you all sorts of problems. Its totally your call but you need to uninstall one via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

It looks like you have the entire suite for both programs
F Secure
mcafee.

Read this
Smart Computing

Most anti-virus programs operate in two modes:

  • Scan:the utility examines memory and files on disk for traces of malware. This involves actually examining the contents each file for things that "look like" viruses.
  • Monitor:often referred to as "real time" monitor, the anti virus program is continually running and scans files as they are downloaded to your machine, notifying you nearly immediately if the file you just received contains something that looks like a virus.
  • There's nothing at all wrong periodically running an anti-virus scan with more than one anti-virus program. The key here is that it's just a scan - it starts, it scans, and then it's done. There's no opportunity to come in to conflict with another anti-virus program.
  • Real time monitoring, on the other hand, is another story. When you install most anti-virus programs they often automatically install and enable their real-time monitors. Running two or more real-time anti-virus monitors at the same time is very likely to cause a conflict. That conflict could result in error messages, crashes of the anti-virus programs, or other types of failure.
  • So it's certainly OK to have more than one anti-virus program installed, and it can make sense to run a scan using a different program from time to time, but you must make sure you only have one real-time monitor enabled at a time.
"Running two or more real-time anti-virus monitors at the same time is very likely to cause a conflict."

  • Anti Virus programs are also big resource hogs, running more than one can slow down your system
  • The simplest way to do so, is to rely on a single, good anti-virus program and make sure that its database of known viruses is continually being updated.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Thanks ken545, I hope this is the correct way to reply - being a newbie not sure  I have checked my mcafee security centre and the virus scan is disabled, think I had to to install FSecure antivirus. I will try to follow your other advice and see how it goes over the weekend. Thanks again rockbiker

Your log looks fine malware wise but you still have two anti virus programs running and this may be your problem. Unless you uninstall one of them there is not much more I can do for you. Ken :D

Thanks ken454, I appreciate it that you have checked the log and there is no malware. I have checked mcafee security centre again and it shows virus scan in not installed but I will try uninstalling again. Thanks again. rockbiker

Uninstall both these programs and then post a new HJT log.

McAfee SecurityCenter
McAfee Personal Firewall Plus

Glad things are better

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
