Hello.

I'm new at this, although people have recommended your program, and I just want to make sure my PC is working OK.

I've downloaded the HiJackThis program, & saved a log which I've included below.

One thing I have noticed is that the connection drops quite often, although this could be down to my provider.

Can anybody tell me if there are any entries which need removing please?

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:




Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Delete this File if listed:
C:\ALCMTR.EXE



Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.


Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

1. Filename Description
ALCMTR.EXE Realtek AC97 Audio - Event Monitor. "Sypware" file used surreptitiously monitor one's actions. It is not a sinister one, like remote control programs, but it is being used by Realtek to gather data about customers

2. It cleans temp files, cookies, etc.

3. userinit without a , at the end. it needs fixed.

Ok. I trust ATF cleaner will not delete any important files? Also, this userinit file - given this is a Microsoft file (which is used to log people on?). There are two users set up at the moment. I've heard you shouldn't alter/delete it, as I may not be able to start Windows? Sorry if I sound ungrateful, although I hope nothing goes wrong. I take it I should do a System Restore point beforehand, if I need to be able restore things? Thank you for your help so far, LDT. If you could reply please?

I have looked at ATF cleaner. I have my worries, given that I do not have an external hard drive to back up my PC onto, therefore I am going to wait until I can back up my PC (as I might lose important files permanently). After I have done that, then I will come back to you. Thank you for your help, but I am not sure I want to risk things at present.
