thanks

Hello Michael and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You are doing fine not to worry. You do have some nasty adware, but I would like to run a few scans and clean you up properly. If that sounds good to you follow these directions.

1) You are running HJT from the Desktop. Please make sure there is a folder. If not, RIGHT click a blank spot and make a new folder. Call it HJT and move the HijackThis.exe into it. Logs and backups store there also. Thanks.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.

4) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

5) Open Add Remove programs and uninstall AdwareFilter if it is there.
Open Task Manager then the processes tab. End process on this program if it is there:
C:\Program Files\AdwareFilter\AdwareFilter.exe

6) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O3 - Toolbar: AdwareFilter - {1028F737-81E7-452B-A860-E50CAD90A08C} - C:\Program Files\AdwareFilterToolBar\AdwareFilter.dll
O4 - Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE
see this >> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/F…t.exe-2855.html
O4 - Global Startup: AdwareFilter Background Protection.lnk = C:\Program Files\AdwareFilter\AdwareFilter.exe
see this >> http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pe…px?id=453088454

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

7) SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\AdwareFilter\ >>> folder

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE >>> file <<< only the file in red!!!

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

8) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure your do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with and feedback you have.

Thanks…pskelley

Hi pskelley. Many thanks for all the trouble you took in sending me that detailed reply. I have, I think, carried out all the steps faithfully. I' ll paste in the log of the Ewido sacn, done after the changes. Thanks again. Debarra, Dublin , Ireland ——————————————————— ewido security suite - Scan report ——————————————————— + Created on: 21:19:52, 13/08/2005 + Report-Checksum: 2C8E91DE + Scan result: C:\Documents and Settings\Michael B. Hi Debarra, The Ewido scan looks clean, all I need now is a new HJT log to see if the bad stuff is gone. Open HJT and click "Do a system scan and save a logfile" then copy and paste the information that comes up in the notepad into this same thread. I will review your post as soon as possible. I wanted to say my ancestors all came from Ireland. I have done a little digging and though I have Skelley for a surname, it may well have been Scully back then. And we are surely tellers of tales. Thanks…Phil
Hi Phil,

Yes, there are lots of Skelleys in Ireland (as well as Scully). Both are definitely of Irish origin.

Anyway thanks again for your help.

below is todays HJT log:

Hi Michael, Your HJT log is clean as an Irish whistle  I can tell you my ancestors settled in the mountains of the Appalachian chain and when I look at pictures of the Irish countryside it looks just like the little village where I was born. Over here prior to the revolutionary war they were.
Great job on your part with the cleanup  If all is well on your end you are good to go and I want to leave you with this information. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
