It Has Been "fun" But You Must Now Die

We have a very strong virus on our computer. This virus slipped by Macafee. I addition to Macafee I installed prevx1 and they have
located a number of files that have been deleted. Meanwhile, the computer is still infected becasue the virus changed code in two Microsoft
programs or replaced them with new ones. It also installed a file it named lkfzzqwjqwahl.dll in the sytem32 directory. By looking at the file structure of this dll I see that the actual file name is msnetax.dll the file size is 21504kb.

The attack has changed / replaced the following program files
winlogon.exe
svchost.exe

It has included the file name lkfzzqwjqwahl.dll in the winsock file.

There were a number of files on the machine that we deleted which Macafee finally found with help of Prevx1 and they are not comming back.

SPYBOT has been run and run as of one hour ago. Same with spyware blaster.

The attack created a special temp file and a "temporary internet files" in doc/settings/local services I keep killing that file but the file is created as a system file and has put files in there that macafee says are trying to hijack info. Inside one of those files we found a dos program and killed it.

The attack has renamed unwise32.exe to a glbla2b (just to show you what this thing is doing).

Biggest threat is with iexplore cause it is calling on websites and trying to take me to sex sites. Main site called svservice.info is always called first and then the list goes on and on. Have put svservice.info on restricted site list and that has helped a little. I do not know how to clean up
iexplore.exe to stop this take over.

My problem.
If I restore proper winlogon and schost.exe and delete the lkfzzqwjqwahl.dll, the winsock files get messed up and the connection to the server is destroyed.

I tried to remove the name lkfzzqwjqwahl.dll from the winsock files using LSPfix but the program instructions were not clear to me and I decided to seek the help of experts familar with these things.

I have attached a new hijack log so you can see what is now in place. I am hoping that someone will recognize these symptoms and give me a few tips to clean up the system.

I have no idea what program wrote the lkfzzqwjqwahl.dll file (real name msnetax.dll) and I dont know if it is still around or if the dll came in by way of a download. Reason, I have been getting reports of carp** for the past few weeks but all seemed to be just "stuff" until this came along. So I may have deleted the root virus file. Oh, I did find ntos.exe in system32 that is the first file that macfee finally found.

Looking forward to your great ideas on this and thanks in advance for looking at this long message.

Hi,carmack and welcome to Tom Coyote forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!

Hello Dan; Thank you for your offer of help. This morning macafee notified me that something called downloader AHW had attempted to activate. The log file says C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\TMP_5D.DLL "detected as Downloader-AWH" "TMP_5D.DLL source Windows system32" "windows?applnit dlls HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\nt\currentversion" report says it deleted these items. As I logged on to get to this site, macafee noted this message: 4/20/2007 8:35:24 AM Blocked by Access Protection rule LAWRENCE-FOQ6D4\Lawrence C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pbk Anti-virus Maximum Protection:Protect phonebook files from password and email address stealers Action blocked : Read There are about 15 or so files in the quarintine folder I can list them if you need a list. Dan;
Further info. In my research of this problem, I found a very interesting article on the microsoft site. The article is written by a private security company and they discuss the virus that seems to be attacking my machine. I dont know if it is okay to post links on this board but this is the link to a pdf file that is very professional written by Secure Science Corp. it is informative (also over my head). It describes how the hack is put in the winlogon file and is therefore protected against capture.

This original report is published here:
http://ip.securescience.net/advisories/pub…reCaseStudy.pdf
A program (and source code) for detection of the trojan is available here:
http://ip.securescience.net/advisories/prgdetect.zip
Source code for the reversed trojan and source code for the stolen data decoder may be available by contacting Secure Science Corporation.

Regards
Lawrence
Hi carmack

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, browse and find the file click open which will place it in the fied

c:\windows\system32\lkfzzqwjqwahl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp_5d.dll

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

post back the reports.
Thanks dan
Dan Sorry for the delay. The computer froze up on Saturday and would not re-open despite all attempts. Had to do a restore from the install disk and got it running. BUT before this virus the computer had just been updated with latest Msoft updates. (I think a few updates after infection) but nonetheless all up to current. So we re-load XP from the CD and it includes SP=1. Attempted to contact MS to get SP-2 and could not log on to the site. Downloaded SP-2 PROGRAM from MS-download site and put into C:\Windows. Ran SP-2 got access denied error. Followed MS tech article fixed two registry permissions. Re=ran SP-2 got access denied This time got lots of stuff but could not find any info about how to fix this mess. FYI We have run a lot of virus programs and followed the suggestions in them to "fix" errors. Perhaps we have screwed this system up more than it was. I have the install log if you want to see it but it is too big for this site due we turned on verbose settings. The access denied errors are gone but SP2 will not install. FYI I believe we have killed the virus that was done with AVG and a trend micro scan. Meanwhile I am considering a full re-install (I hate that!!) Let me know if you can review my log file is is about 2megs which I can email to you. OR I can post it to alternative location==if you have a suggested place please advise. Regards Lawrence.

I am thinking of putting together a cd for XP that has service pack 2 slipstreamed into it. Then we would do a repair install of XP and see if that will go forward. If not===then I think the amount of work is not justified and the system needs to be re-installed.

What do you think??
Thanks
Lawrence
Not forgot you, have had two busy day's at work and now just getting through the backlog of logs. hope not to be too long. dan
Hi carmack

Ok, take your time and if at any point your not sure get back to me, you will be fine.
"Please print out the following instructions so you will have them readily at hand." at some points in safe mode you won't have net access.

Have you got the reports from jotti's I asked for please I need to see them.

Your log shows that you have two different antivirus programs installed and running side-by-side ( McAfee and AVG ).
Do not attempt to run two entirely different 'on-access' resident scanner anti-virus products simultaneously. It is simply an accident waiting to happen. Having more than one antivirus program running and "active in memory" will most definitely use far more additional resources, adversely affecting your access to files and causing overall system slowdowns.

Most of the popular anti-virus products (when running together) will "fight for control" over the user's machine, and it is this conflict that will create slowing the system speed as well as other serious compatibility problems. This can also create registry conflicts as well as causing false virus alerts - or worse, missing alerts entirely!

Additionally, many of these types of programs simply do not "play nice" or work well with each other. Unfortunately, the only thing many of these types of security applications seem to detest more than potentially harmful viruses - is other antivirus applications running simultaneously together with them. Also, not all AV programs can be installed as secondary scanners, and sometimes installing separate AV programs will cause a conflict or the program's installer will even try to 'uninstall' any other anti-virus programs during the installation.

Therefore, my advice would be to pick one (or the other) of your antivrius programs to use and then use Windows Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the one that you do not want to use anymore.

Your log shows that MSConfig is running at startup. This indicates that you may be using "diagnostic startup" rather than "normal startup" to stop something from running. While this is normally OK, it is possible that you have disabled something that will affect how we fix your malware problem. While disabled, it will not show up in the HijackThis log.

Go to Start > Run and type Notepad
Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is unchecked.

regedit /a /e %systemdrive%\regkey.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig"
notepad %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
del /q %systemdrive%\regkey.txt

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "mslook.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate mslook.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

This entry would legitimately show if an administrator set the restriction on purpose or if the user utilized Spybot S&D's Home Page and Option Lock down features in the Mode ->Advanced Mode -> Tools -> IE Tweaks section. (Or there could be other similar tools with similar options/functions.
Are you the administrator and did you set the restriction? If you didn't, then you can fix the following two entries.

Dan: THANK YOU for your time and effort to help us with the computer problem. Unfortunately, when we cleaned the machine with McAfee we must have deleted a file needed and killed the system. Could not re-boot and repair windows failed. As you know the window repair and all of these scans take up a hell of a lot of time. When bettsy would not re-boot, we decided time to re-install. So here is what we did. Re format drive C. Install XP on the empty partition Re installed all software from off line CDs or original CDs Data files checked and rechecked for carp**. That total process took the better part of one day due to many Microsoft Windows updates installs and Office updates. Computer now running only AVG anti virus as you suggested. McAfee is not resident in memory but is up to date. No errors, no viruses, no carp** cookies, no spyware. Machine is now running fast again. I am sorry that we could not work thru this together but the time was killing me and knowing that each time I went online someone/something was looking. Thank you again for your kind assistance and time. It is much appreciated. Regards Lawrence FYI: I found the file that contained the problem. It was attached to an email from China that was apparently hooked to a PDF file. I do business with a guy in H Kong and he sent me a file that was messed up. Since I trust him, I fixed the file and opened it====big mistake. Never again. He has been advised and was aware something was going wrong with his computer but did not know what. He reports that he too simply re-installed XP.
