Hi, thank you for your reply. A few days ago i inadvertedly executed an online virus file. It has installed it's foundations deep within the hard drive. Various settings have been changed, the sound card has been disabled, the computer performance has slowed down considerably. AVG frequently and randomly warns of a trojan file, i opt either to move it to vault or to heal it, still the pop-ups continue regardless. Ad-Adware shows a minimum of 2 tracking cookies that return whenever i log online, this has only been since i executed the virus file. There have been phoney spyware programmes installed, they appear to be viruses in themselves. Occasionally while using the internet, the keyboard and touchpad lose control. The browser history now often shows ???? as a result. Windows saved files now includes something called "windows safety alert" which gives the same AVG virus alerts when i try to remove it. Previously there was smitfraud, cnsmin and other undesireables that i haven't been able to remove. it doesn't seem likely that they are responible for the problems with the trojan but if you know of a way to remove them then i may be able to once again do online banking. Thank you for any advice that you are willing to offer.

It looks like you're running 2 anti-virus programs: AVG and Norton's anti-virus.
You need to uninstall one of them because that can cause all types of problems.
If you uninstall Norton's, do this:

In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.

After the above:
Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread and we'll see what we can do
