My PC has recently started to slow down significantly, and it's increasing lately. I can't seem to figure out what issues I might have. Anytime I start more than one program my PC gets slow and I can hear the sound of a fan in my PC rev up and slow down. Here is my HijackThis log...thanks in advance!

Hi Medz,

You do not appear to be running any antivirus software. Without antivirus software your computer is very vulnerable to infections and your computer may be reinfected before I have a chance to respond to your log.

There are several free packages available, two of the most popular are here:
AVG Antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/

Download and install one of these programs immediately, update the definitions and set it to update automatically. Then do a full system scan and quarantine/delete anything it finds, and make a note of where the logfile is stored.

Your log shows that MSConfig is running at startup. This indicates that you may be using "diagnostic startup" rather than "normal startup" to stop something from running. While this is normally OK, it is possible that you have disabled something that will affect how we fix your malware problem. Please don't change anything in MSConfig yet, these instructions will produce a report of what programs are currently disabled so I can see the entries without requiring any changes:

Go to Start > Run and type Notepad
Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is unchecked.

regedit /a /e %systemdrive%\regkey.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig"
notepad %systemdrive%\regkey.txt
del /q %systemdrive%\regkey.txt

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "mslook.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate mslook.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply. When you close Notepad the CMD window will close automatically and the text file will be deleted.

Once complete, please post the antivirus log, the mslook.bat results and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Medz,

First, please open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a check-mark next to the following line:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt, then close HijackThis.

The programs you have disabled in MSConfig don't appear to be malware, however you have SBCSTray disabled - this is related to Sunbelt Counterspy Antispyware and you may not be receiving the full protection of this program if it is disabled. You should now use MSConfig to re-enable this startup program. If for some reason you don't want to use this program at all, please let me know.

AVG looks to have found some bad files, we'll have another look to see if there's anything remaining:

Click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Then do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.

Next, locate the Generate StartupList Log button and make sure both boxes next to it are checked (List all minor sections(Full) and List Empty Sections(Complete) )
Then click Generate StartupList Log and say Yes to the prompt
Please save the Startup list log to your desktop and include a copy in your next response.

Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log, the uninstall list and the startup list, along with a new HijackThis log. You may need to use multiple posts to make sure the logs aren't cut off. Also, tell me how your computer is running :)

Thanks again for all your help! It's still running slower than normal, and that loud fan sound keeps revving up anytime I open more than one program. Here are the logs:

Let me just say, after doing everything you suggested and restarting my computer, it's running a LOT better. I'd say at around 80-90% of the speed it was running at before. I don't know if I still have stuff to clean up, but it's already soooo much better, you're a lifesaver!

Hi Medz,

Please Download NoLop to your desktop from one of the links below...
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it
  • Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish
  • Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log in your next response
--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx and copy it into your C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder then rerun the program.--

Next, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a check-mark next to the following line:
O1 - Hosts file is located at: C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt, then close HijackThis.

Next we have some programs to uninstall, please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs to remove the appropriate programs:

You have several peer-to-peer file sharing applications installed on your computer. P2P applications are one of the biggest sources of malware we see, some of the applications themselves come bundled with malware, and anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.

BitLord contains adware and should be removed, I strongly recommend you remove BitTorrent and Limewire also.

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Please remove all installed versions of Java:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/...loads/index.jsp

Then one more scan to check if anything is hiding from us:

Please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe):
https://europe.f-sec...light/try.shtml
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Once complete, please post the NoLop log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log.
