Hi, I recently downloaded a cracked version of internet explorer 7…..I normally use firefox (the best) but a relative wanted internet explorer so I complied. It ws working fine up until today. When I used it it began to blink and flash uncontrollably and all of a sudden it just crashed. My computer screen went blank and only the hand (instead of arrow, don;t know why) pointer was visible. I just pressed the off button on my computer. When it restarted….kerio personal firewall built this kernel dump or crash report something. it prompted me to upload the error to the kerio server but the file was too large (136 MB) and I didn't have time. So I exited that and now the computer is running as if nothing happened. I am not using internet explorer right now but i want to know if that was the problem or if there is bug on my computer.
here is the hijack this log. thanks in advance

Hi lukeb19, OK, so I have a silly question. Why did you use a cracked version of IE7? A perfectly legit and free version is available to valid Windows users from MS. Is your copy of Windows legit? Post back to address those questions. It does appear that the machine may have (or have been) infected with Vundo. Do you know anything about this? Dave
Hey Dave, Well i used the crack because my Windows is not legit…and yes I have VundoFix program on my computer (can't remember how to use it though) I had a trojan lop.as and I was told to use that during the clean up process by one of the guys from ur team at tomcoyote.
Hi lukeb19,

No problem, thanks for being honest. Technically we are not supposed to offer help to users unless they are legit.

I'm not sure if Vundo is back or not. Looks like some entries may have been leftovers. You want to download and run the updated tool anyway so delete your old one and proceed.

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

I will say if you keep downloading and using cracked software you will be a regular in these forums as you will just keep picking up new infections.

Give the tool a try. As far as your IE7 issue I think it's self explanatory. Don't use it.

Dave
Hey thanks for helping me even though I'm not legit. I never knew that you were'nt allowed. oh well. The tool found NO VUNDO. But here's the log anyway…..as well as an HJT log. I also uninstalled IE7 and now I have IE6 which just came back instead of IE7. Is there a way I can completely remove Internet explorer??
I really never liked the browser.

VundoFix V6.3.19

Is there a way I can completely remove Internet explorer??
I really never liked the browser.

I have read ways of doing it but I don't recommend trying it. IE is so tightly integrated into Windows it will likely cause more harm than any good. There is really no need to remove it. Just don't use it. You have Firefox and just set that as your default browser.

OK I didn't think the Vundo tool would find anything. Just some cleanup I guess.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {679F1D70-6D0F-4247-8AAE-720778C44BE9} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {ED2C9419-C00C-4D05-85D7-67C2B14A559A} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljgd - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqopqq - C:\WINDOWS\

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

What are you running for an Antivirus? Kaspersky? Looks like you had Symantec at one time also. Just want to make sure you don't run more than one at a time.

You also need to update Java.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save it to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windowsi586.exe to install the newest version.
Reboot, post a fresh HJT log.
Ok, I did everything…..here's the new HJT log

Log looks clean

I'll give you my typical prevention speech but for you the most important thing to do is avoid the cracks and non-legit software downloaded from P2P sites. If you don't it won't matter what protection you have in place…you will be back here again :end of rant:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files, cookies, cache, ect…

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Peace,
Dave
