Go to:
Start - Run - (type)MSCONFIG - Enter

Select the StartUp(tab)

Remove the checkmark/tick from in front of all the items in the StartUp list (except your AntiVirus and Firewall).

Consider downloading AVG AntVirus.

Once you have AVG AntiVirus downloaded, close all browser windows.

Uninstall McAfee via Control Panel
Start - Control Panel - Add/Remove
Select McAfee and click Remove

After McAfee has been uninstalled, go to where you downloaded/saved your AVG AntiVirus and double-click it to begin the Installation.

Disable "ctfmon.exe" by going to:
Control Panel - Regional and Language Options - Languages - Details - Advanced - checkmark/tick the box that says "Turn off advanced text services"

To turn off "eye candy":
Right-Click on My Computer - Select - Properties - Select - Advanced(tab) - Click on Settings in Performance Options - Select - Adjust for Best Performance.

Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Defrag

AVG AntiSpyware and AVG AntiVirus have offered their free version for years, and continue to do so. I've not heard of a free version of McAfee - except the one bundled with AOL software.

As to AVG AntiSpyware (free version) – It is fully functional and allows manual data and engine updates daily.

AVG AntiSpyware is produced and owned by Grisoft Company in Germany.
They produce and sell several "paid products" including a "paid product version" of AVG AntiSpyware.

Since they are in business, they offer to sell their paid version. <— I wouldn't expect otherwise.
The paid version automates some features, like updates and look-ups, but the (free version) provides the same high level of security protection as the (paid version).

Here's a screen-shot of a machine I am using right now.
It has the (free version) of AVG AntiSpyware.
No Scans have been run since 03/20/2007 <— So it is prompting to "Scan Now"
AVG has not been "updated" on this machine since 03/26/2007 <—- So it is prompting to "Update Now"

And, the Panel also displays an options to upgrade to the (paid version) <—- Hey, it's a business.
But the user can continue with the (free version) and enjoy the same level of security/protection, but without the "automated" features of the (paid version).

Your machine isn't "broken". It's just "overloaded".
I do not suspect that anything bad has been done to the machine, it just needs some maintenance.
I determined that from the PCPitstop Full Test Results, that you posted as TechExpress.
Looking at the "Windows Results" page shows a ton of extra/unnecessary processes running, that can be safely disabled via MSCONFIG.
This is a common problem (overloading a machine with unnecessary processes).
Some of the "overloading" occurs by default from Microsoft, and from other third-party utilities and applications.

Please post a Screen-Shot of your MSCONFIG and we'll give you specific recommendations for how to clear up some of the load.

This download includes a simple batch file (mvps.bat) that will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP then copy the included updated HOSTS file to the proper location.

You may use the included batch file "mvps.bat" to copy the included HOSTS file to the proper
location on your machine. This batch file will backup the existing HOSTS file prior to copying
the updated version. The backed-up file will be renamed to HOSTS.MVP.
To use: double-click on mvps.bat
