Problems:
1) Slow startup. I have taken out as much as I put in which automatically starts, except for firewall (Zone alarm) and anti-virus (Avast home edition), and spywareblaster.

There are probably other processes which automatically start that I don't need. I don't know how to identify them. I did a spybot S&D scan earlier today.

It found a tracking cookie, which I fixed. Windows Updates also ran, installing stuff, which literally took hours and hours to run. :rant2:

2) I have almost no disk space left. About 800 MB (out of 10 GB). WHERE did it all go? Are there temporary files from MS windows updates that I need to clean up? Any other temp files I need to hunt down and eliminate?

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

There's nothing bad in your HJT log.

You only have 256k. You should have at least 512k to run XP2 and the other needed security programs.

Have a look here and see if that helps.

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

There's nothing bad in your HJT log.

You only have 256k. You should have at least 512k to run XP2 and the other needed security programs.

Have a look here and see if that helps.

I have an old laptop. It was originally a Windows ME system when I bought it; I had already expanded memory to run Windows XP. I can't afford to keep replacing hardware. My computer is now crippled because of the operating system itself, not because of malware. I had a great deal of concern about installing Windows Service Pack 2. See http://forums.tomcoy...a...st&p=358112 where it was DEFINITELY recommended I install SP2 for security reasons. I said I thought it would slow down my system. I suppose I should've stuck with my instincts. But how would I know if I didn't try it?

Now, my machine is much, much worse off than if there were actual malware running on it because it is so slow. (And I don't have enough room for my OWN data on the hard drive because Windows is such a pig). :(

I would really appreciate it if you could tell me how to restore my computer. Thank you.

If I use the 'restore point' saved from just before the installation of SP2, will I get back my computer from MS-Windows hell? I.e. will I get back the
1) availability of CPU
2) availability of RAM
3) availability of disk space

The operating system is not the reason I own and run a computer. The O.S. is supposed to only be the underlying support to manage the machine's resources. The reason I have a computer is so I can run my own applications I write, and to run some other applications written by others - such as a 3rd party web browser, not Microbrain's IE. :rant2:

If I can't restore my computer to a reasonable state, i.e. before I applied SP2, then I might as well save my data, and then learn how to install and use a Linux-derived operating system. Microsoft has no mercy whatsoever for average everyday people who can't buy a whole new computer every 3 years. Microsoft doesn't actually have an operating system for personal computers. That's a lie and an illusion the computer industry perpetuates to give themselves job security, and to keep us all buying unnecessary upgrades to s.w. and h.w.

Even if the HJT log doesn't show anything, there is most definitely something wrong with my system, because it is acting as if hackers have broken into my computer and slowed everything down. My conclusion after this experience is that Microsoft Windows == Malware.

Also, I posted http://forums.tomcoy...a...st&p=358108 on March 3rd, but it was ignored. It would've been nice if someone had responded to that and told me NOT to install SP 2 because it would cripple my machine. :(

XP2 will run on a pc that has just 64k really. You wouldn't be able to run anything else though.
When was the last time you ran defrag?

1.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

2.
Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e startup.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
start notepad startup.txt

Save this as look.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
This is how the batch must look after you created it: Posted Image
Doubleclick on look.bat and post the contents of it in your next reply

It occurred to me to run defrag this morning, just before I read your response. But defrag can only help a little bit because there's only 7-9% of my disk space available. My computer isn't currently on the Internet, so I'll post the rest of the stuff later. (using a different computer to read&post). I notice that several entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg refer to EXE programs I have uninstalled from my computer. Details to follow...

My ISP is Verizon, but I don't know what "Smart bridge" is, or if it is necessary.

Uninstalled: Ad-aware, USB-To_PDA, Winamp

"Jusearch" probably has something to do with Juno, my old dialup connection to the internet. I will get rid of Juno, because I don't use it anymore.

I see 4 to uncheck click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key. look in the Startup. Uncheck these: Ad-aware dumprep 0 -k hcm Winampa After you uncheck it and rebooting, you'll be using Selective startup. When you see the box popup that tells you that, just put a Check in the Box to not show that when you startup. That's how I run mine.

See http://pg.photos.yah...d...jpg&.src=ph for my current MSConfig set up.

3 strange things:
  • Spybot S&D's TeaTimer gave me fits. I don't think I had it turned on, and I don't recall turning it on. Maybe I did. I definitely needed to turn it off. It's off now.
  • zlClient appears to be starting twice. Should I uncheck one of these?
  • The list from the "Look.bat" script is even longer than it was before! I can post it if needed
I was thinking... My connection to the internet is through a pc card. I usually pull this out of its slot before I boot up. I could write a .bat script which starts Avast, ZoneAlarm, and SpywareBlaster and run it before I put the card in. That way, if I am only booting up to do non-networking tasks, I don't have the overhead of these other processes.

I was also thinking of only using internet from a non-admin account, except that doesn't work all the time because Windows Updates and possibly other things need to be installed while logged in as an admin user - while connected to the 'net.

I see you've also posted in Other Computer Problems

Was a bad thing to post on the other forum? (hope not!)

I thought I had unstalled that USB-to-PDA software, but it's still hanging around. Even if I just delete the files that I know about, the registry will still be wrong, and other files could be floating around, such as unneeded DLLS.

Anyway, my computer still boots very slowly. After about 7 minutes or so, the activity dies down, and things are okay for a while. But Windows Update might start up, or Avast might take it into its head to fetch virus updates, or FoxFire downloading the latest version of itself. I can put up with a bunch of this, but if all of my apps that have to do with the 'net start auto-updating themselves or their databases, I'm in deep due-due. :wtf:

I view certain things in my life as "utilities". Turning on a faucet, a light switch, a T.V., a mobile phone, a stereo or entertainment system, an electric typewriter (I don't think I have one anymore, but if I do, it's in deep deep storage :D ), a PDA, an iPod (don't own one yet  ), the ignition of my automobile, and so forth.

There are other utilities in my life which are "always on". My refrigerator. My heating and air conditioning system.

I expect my computer to be in one or the other of these two categories. Either it turns on within a few seconds, or it is "always on" like a refrigerator or furnace.

Since it doesn't seem like it is ever again going to fit into the first category, I will put it into the second category. In other words, I will never shutdown, except under the most dire circumstances. I will always put it into hibernation when I'm done.

Problems solved? What do you think?

If I have turned off my DSL modem and turned it back on, I would have a different network address. That means I would need to "safely remove" my wireless network card, and then re-insert it so that my software learns about the new IP address.

I still would like to recover more of my disk space. I uninstalled MS Publisher, and MS Media Content. The "Add/Remove" program said these took up 1.2 GB of disk space or so. I already had about 700 MB. So I should have nearly 2 GB free, but it's only around 1.7 free. I'll have to hunt for other things to remove.

I don't play many games on my computer. In fact, I really don't play any except ChessMaster 8000. Well, I think the 8000 must have something to do with the amount of space it hogs. It's ~800 MB of space. And YET, it still requires me to put the CD into the drive to run.

Also, I only have WEP encryption on my router/network card. I know I need to get WPA or something better, if that exists. While I don't see the point on spending thousands of dollars on new computers for personal use every few years, I do see the point of getting new network H.W. about every 4-5 years. Any recommendations?

Do you think I need to re-post my hijack log, or registry entries, or other data?

Thank you for your time and patience!

Was a bad thing to post on the other forum? (hope not!)

That's a good thing. They work more with issues like you are having.

You can try this:

lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Some items may come back because of the programs you have running.

I'm having a problem burning CDs. I'm really discouraged by using Windows right now. http://forums.tomcoy...a...st&p=367360

I wish it didn't take so long to install the operating system. I would just start over. I might not even install XP, but just install ME. Or just dump Windows completely (if I can figure out how to do that) http://forums.tomcoy...a...st&p=367371

I don't feel all that great about messing with my registry when something as basic as writing files to a CD drive breaks. But, I will go ahead and select all the red items and fix them (in RegSeeker), as you said in your previous post. At least I'll know that whatever the problem is, it happened before this round of cleaning the registry.

thanks

In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

NOTE: To be extra safe you can choose to only remove the items in RED.
Some items may come back because of the programs you have running.

  • I downloaded ERUNT and ran it, backing up my registry. I should probably run it every time I install or uninstall something.
  • I downloaded RegSeeker, ran Clean Registry
  • After the scan finished, I made sure the "backup" check box was checked, clicked 'Select', clicked 'Select all'
  • I right clicked on one of the selected, and clicked the command to delete the entries.
  • I repeated scanning, selecting, and deleting until all but 2 entries were gone
  • I rebooted
  • I uninstalled more stuff. Successfully ran several programs. I probably should run RegSeeker again.
  • While using RegEdit, I found that the registry contains some keys which, when I attempt to open them, produce an error "Error while opening key" (The phantom USB-to-PDA cable setup program is one of them. I don't think I have the cable anymore; if I did, I'd try to reinstall it and then uninstall it)
Everything seems to be working fine, except burning CDs, which was broken to begin with.

I also downloaded Microsoft's AutoRuns. I never use Outlook, so I unchecked (setup library and data migration tool). I tried to uncheck CTFmon. It came back. Also unchecked: Verizon's "control pad" (Verizon is my ISP), Windows Messenger.

I no longer start up SpywareBlaster automatically. Maybe I'll figure out a way to do that from a login script after about 10 minutes.

I deleted 2 extra user accounts on my computer.

I changed the login program so that it does not use the Welcome Screen anymore. That seems to be faster.

Current state of things:
  • It takes approximately 30 seconds to come back from hibernation
  • It takes 2.5 minutes for a "hard boot" (i.e. from the powered down state)
For the time being, I'm going to settle for these.

I will examine the possibility of switching from MS Windows XP to MS Windows 2000. But switching from XP to 2000 might be a lot of work. I think I'd have to completely reinstall the operating system. Also, I bought MS Office XP Professional, and I don't know if it will be compatible with 2000. Going from XP to 2000 costs money because
  • I'd have to pay for Windows 2000
  • I've already paid for the XP upgrade, which I'd be throwing away
  • I've spent a significant amount of money on Office XP Pro, whch I'm not sure I'll be able to use with 2000
I figured out how to burn ISO files using CDBurner XP, and I've already burned DSL (boots and runs very fast!) and Puppy Linux (not as fast, not sure if I'll like it). I'm also going to try several other operating systems. Other Linux Distros, and hopefully FreeBSD.

I'm thinking that slowly, I'll get the hang of them, and convert the code I've written, my photos and other images, my documents, and my other data to a Unix-style OS. It's just a matter of time before I'll feel at home in Linux/Unix.

I'd like to learn how to set up partitioning so I can "dual-boot" between XP and at least 1 Linux OS - but that's for another topic in another forum.

Thank you, LDTate, for all of your help. It's nice to know someone knows this stuff. I'll keep the various tools you referenced on hand, in case I need to use them again. If there is anything else I need to follow up on, please post it. Otherwise, I think we can move this to "resolved" forum.

Thank you!!!
