Hi,magikand welcome to Tom Coyote forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!
dan

Hi magik

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, browse and find the file click open which will place it in the field.

C:\WINDOWS\SecureWin32.exe

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustota...l/index_en.html

post results please
dan

Hi magik

You did just fine with my last request.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

please post the vundofix.txt
in your next post

Hey Dan,

I ran VundoFix.exe and it came up with nothing. When I first signed on this morning, my antivirus, AVG did find a few infections and put them in the vault. I couldn't copy them so I retyped them so you could see what it found:

Trojan horse generic2.VOI C:\WINDOWS\SecureWin33.exe 3/26/07 32KB
Trojan horse generic2.VOG C:\WINDOWS\SecureWin31.dll 3/26/07 68KB
Trojan horse Downloader.Generic3.QLL C: WindowsUpdates.exe 3/26/07 24KB

Adware Generic.XQS C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsqqo.dll 3/27/07 26KB
Adware Generic.XQS C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkkkii.dll 3/27/07 26KB
Adware Generic.XQS C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklmlk.dll 3/27/07 26KB

I think some of these are what you were expecting VundoFix.exe to find - at least that's a guess!!! LOL

Anyway, I ran a new hijack this log

Thanks again, Dan, I really appreciate the help!

Ok did everything you recommended. The only thing I had a problem with was on the AVG Anti-Spyware I could not change the Resident Shield or the Automatic Updates. There was no where to change them and there wasn't anything called Change State near them. There was absolutely nothing by them that would change. Also when I right clicked the system tray icon, I couldn't do anything with the START WITH WINDOWS - it was grayed out completely.

Anyway, did the steps. The 3 files you said to look for were in fact gone.... :)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsqqo.dll <========This file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\jkklmlk.dll <========This file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mljjg.dll <========This file

I ran ATF Cleaner as instructed

I did the AVG Anti-Spyware and the report is as follows:

Hi magik

Log looks good well done!

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.
  • Re hide your system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
    • Double-click My Computer.
    • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    • Click the View tab.
    • Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Under the
      Hidden files
      folder, select
Do not show hidden files and folders.
    • Check
      Hide protected operating system files.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Stand up and be Counted.

NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is ................ please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

Dan, Thanks a lot for your patience and expertise! I really appreciate it. Computer is running much better and no known problems at this time! Thanks a lot. I usually keep my system restore off. I have things completely backed up and am not afraid to re-install XP when the need arises. Do you see this as a problem? I know most people like to have a restore base but I don't like to waste the space the restore points take and since I have all my tweaks and programs readily available I usually just format/reformat when needed. This time I didn't want to do it because I knew that what was killing me was in my storage drive and couldn't remove it - I know its gone now. If keeping the restore off is not a problem, not need to reply - I'll just assume its ok. Thanks again for all your help........you guys are all amazing here!

Hi,magik Given the way you run your set up and at the end of the day it's your machine, what works best for you ;) I can only give my view and that is , I run with system restore on but that is again my choice. as for freeing up space, the price of hard drives has dropped and is not a big issue as it once was, hope that has helped a little. dan
