[phaine01]

I have been getting pop-up ads and ads have been taking over my Explorer tabs. Also, the Explorer title bar dims and the page becomes 'inactive' - if I am typing, nothing I type shows up, etc.
I have run the Verizon anti-virus and anti-spyware at least 3 times, Spybot 2-3 times, and Avast. A bunch of stuff was deleted, but I still have the problems. Any help will be massively appreciated.

PS - I have not been running all of the anti-virus programs at once. I turn the ones I am not using off.

1. Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Anti-Malware:
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.

2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
Click "Next"
In the box to choose where to extract the files to, click "Browse"
Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
Click on "Local Disk (C:) or whatever your primary drive is
Click "Make New Folder"
Type in BFU
Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcan worm remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit Enter.

4. Once in Safe Mode, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
Next to the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu
Press Execute and let it do it\u2019s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

5. Open Ewido:
Click on scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
Click Save report.
Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido anti-malware.

Reboot into normal Windows and post the contents of the Ewido text report that you saved and a new HijackThis log.

Thank you so much for replying to my post.

I did a Google search for the Ewido Anti-Malware software and kept getting AVG anti-virus as the download. I downloaded the Ewido and it told me that the newer version is called AVG.
While installing it, I did NOT get the option to uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu" nor did I get the warning about Database could not be found!" so I hope it worked.

Since the BFU is a free trial version, what happens to the viruses it has quarantined once I delete the program???

Are you running 2 anti-virus programs? Avast and Norton's Symantec?

I suggest you do this:

With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All (if all of the items in quarrantine need removing) then Remove Finally


Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.



Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Hello again.

I did not even know that any part of Norton was still on my computer. When I installed Verizon Internet Security Suite it told me to delete it, so I did. My neice has been using my computer, which is how I got the virus(es). She said the security system slowed the computer down too much, so she turned it off and went on the internet unprotected.
I deleted the remains of Norton. I just downloaded Avast a couple of days ago on the advice of a friend. It actually found a lot of stuff that the Verizon Internet Security Suite did not. I do not run them at the same time, though (at least I don't think I have).
My computer is behaving much better. I am not getting pop-ups and the window does not freeze or become 'inactive' anymore. Internet Explorer is slow to respond--opening, closing, responding to a clicked link. It was like that even before I ran the ATF. It's much better than it was, though. I thank you once again for you assistance.
