hi all -

i had a bad virus infection in january - i don't know what it was, since i just cleaned it out without thinking about it...anyway, since then my computer has been running very slow and certain programs haven't been working right...(for example, MS Office stopped working completely, ProTools (digidesign recording software) will open, but won't playback, and a lot of my audio and vidoe drivers had to be reloaded, and i'm still having problems with certain codecs that i wasn't having problems with before...

i've also noticed that i only have 448 mb of ram, when i should have 512 mb...also, my processor speed clocks at 2.21 ghz when it used to be 2.22 - i don't know if this means anything...

i have an eMachines T3256 AMD athlon xp 3200+

i use spybot, spyware doctor, ad-aware (1.06ri and the new pro beta), startup mechanic, registry mechanic, computer inspector, atf cleaner, freeram xp, cacheman, and ppedia taskmanager - i've found lots of little, minor spyware in the past couple months, but nothing that seems to be interfering with day-to-day operations...

anyway, i followed the instructions in the self-help forum: i've used the atf cleaner, panda scan, ad-aware, and restarted, so here are my pandascan and hijack this logs:

pandascan:

here are the new logs (CWShredder didn't find anything):

sammarlowe :D

This may be related to this. Read it and make sure you read the EULA before you download anything.

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\01 Track 1.wma -> Trojan.Wimad.a : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).

Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove all previous entries for Java.

Java Plug-in 1.4.2
Java Plug-in 1.5.0_08
<-- Remove these two

jre1.5.0_11 <-- Keep this one , it's current.

The rest of your log looks fine and AVG found nothing bad  So I would suggest you post in our other forum for help with your other problems as this forum is for removing Malware only.

OTHER COMPUTER PROBLEMS

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
