ATTN: LDTate - “Giddy’up”- it’s a Trojan rodeo w/mystery malware. My PC is self-aware - PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi –

LDTate, please note previous post below to which you responded (currently in Old Un-Resolved HJT Logs • Post Preview: #340320):

Hi -

LDTate, you've worked wonders for me once in the past - I'm hoping you or one of your compatriots may be able to help me again...(still have repaired/clean Registry on file from the last time you saved me from Apropos bug on 10/16/05).

I'm running ZoneAlarm Pro, SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware, PestPatrol, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and NAV on the following system:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600

____________

No virus/spyware detected on system but I'm experiencing increasingly slower running of Apps; system periodically reboots w/o prompting, hard drive running excessively, often difficult to access Web via IE or Firefox thru SBC/ATT.

Biggest issue: takes more than 12 hours to run NAV - number of files on hard drive increasing exponentially by approximately 1 million every six weeks (currently at 22,100,000)! Source appears to be windows update files but I cannot find them on my drive (hidden files included).

Periodically recover from Serious System Error - latest reads as follows:

I have no idea what that error is.

Try updating drivers for your Video card.

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the icon next to it.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

LD, here’s the latest –

I’ve tried everything you’ve suggested (updating Java, video card driver, addressed slow PC fixes – defrag, extraneous programs, cache, temp files, running only one AV/firewall w/realtime protection, etc) but something is still amiss. Unfortunately, performance didn’t improve. I’ve been trying – to no avail, to figure out what’s happening. To my knowledge, I had no viruses. I was performing weekly scans with NAV but recently noted that according to the program, the last time I did a complete scan was November ’06! I didn’t know if this corresponded to my more than 22 million files (most of which appear to be C:/WINDOWS/Installer/*.msp files) that steadily increase but I decided to try a new AV program. Each NAV scan would take approximately 12-18 hours to “complete” (so I assumed) or eventually froze. I uninstalled NAV and loaded AOL AVS which, during a partial scan, promptly found and deleted the following:

Removal of these problems resulted in some improvement in system performance (no more IE/Mozilla crashes/warm reboots) but it was short-lived. I experienced the same problems with AOL AVS – ridiculous scan times and/or freezes; I could never complete a full scan.

I then tried Comodo Antivirus – I couldn’t turn on the On-Demand Scanning option and experienced the same scan-time and freeze issues. I also tried multiple online scans including Trend Micro House Call 6.5, WindowSecurity/Trojanscan.com, and Ewido.net unsuccessfully (i.e., long scans resulting in freezes). I am basically unable to scan/remove malware via my current methods.

I then tried to install resident SBC/ATT Anti-virus and Spyware programs but came upon Zone Alarm Pro uninstall “artifacts” that prohibited their loading (e.g., “Couldn't find vsinit.dll”, etc)

I am currently running Comodo Firewall, Comodo Ant-Virus, Spy-Bot SD, Spy Sweeper, Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster, Ad-Aware SE, Pest Patrol, Advanced Windows Care V2 Personal, McAfee Site Adviser, and IOBit Smart Defrag on the following system:

I suggest you do this:

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Symantec / Norton modules are still running.

In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.

Hi, LD - thanks for taking this on...

I did everything you said but things got dicey when I ran ATF...I couldn't appropriately reboot (i.e., Startup items like Comodo Launchpad/Antivirus, Comodo Firewall, Spyware Guard, Advanced Windows Care, etc, wouldn't load - even after being allowed to "boot" overnight). I then rebooted in Safe Mode and set the system back to my last good configuration and did everything again except the ATF deletion (which got rid of 75mb of junk); this seemed to solve the reboot issue. Things got quirky again, however, inasmuch as getting rid of the following via HijackThis

R1-HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1-HKCU\Software\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\SearchURL,(Def...http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

placed me in some type of code loop in which I couldn't log in to AT&T/SBC via IE to reply to you...the log-in window keeps toggling and never fully loads. Also, the R1- http://red.clientapp....com/customize/ references seem to reappear despite their deletion with HijackThis.

Here's my latest HijackThis log:

SpywareGuard

Please disable SpywareGuard, as it may interfere with some of our HijackThis fixes:

Right click the SpywareGuard icon in the System Tray at the bottom-right corner of the screen and open the program.
Then go to Menu, File, Exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.

You need To disable SpySweeper, it can stop our fix.
SpySweeper

Hi -

Got up to the point of running combofix.exe but Comodo Anti-Virus tagged and quarantined trojan-clicker.win32.pahador.f; it notes the object name as ntp.exe; I'm assuming this isn't a virus but aborted combofix so I could verify my next step with you. I exited the Comodo LaunchPad (and as a result, so I thought, Comodo Anti-Virus) but when I again ran combofix, I received the same message.

Thanks...

Please go HERE and do a online scan.

Accept the License Agreement.
Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.

Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Also let me know how the computer is running now.

At the significant risk of sounding cognitively impaired, it was never in the Toolbar - only the Comodo LaunchPad was present there and I right-clicked and closed that. When I access Comodo Anti-Virus thru the LaunchPad and attempt to toggle off the On Access Scanner, I receive the following Error Message: STOAC017 - Unable to perform requested operation. That program (much like my system) has been quirky since install. My inclination is to uninstall it so we can move forward but I won't do a thing without a thumbs-up from you.

I want to make sure I am understanding you correctly... Do you want me to skip the Combofix/HijackThis steps and proceed to the f-secure scan?

It looks like you have Yahoo's AV running. C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\VetMsg.exe 1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. 2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed: Comodo Reboot: Then lets try the online scan first.

Hi -

It seems okay...

Did we miss causing anything magical to happen by not running Combofix?

Since we deleted the R1 - H...\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../ references, I'm still caught in a loop when attempting to log in to Yahoo via IE; this specifically occurs when going from

http://www/yahoo/r/l6

to

https://login.yahoo.com/config/login?.src=fpctx&done=http://www.yahoo.com

It just keeps toggling back and forth and I can't enter log-in data into any field.

Also, if I may, a few questions:
Do you recommend any specific or additional software programs/suites for firewall, ant-virus, spyware, etc?
Are there any specific practices I should be doing regularly to keep my system safe/running well?

Thanks...

See if you can run the combofix.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
