Hi Folks

First post so my apologies if I've done anything wrong...I'II try my best.

Friends computer is going unbelieveably slow. It hasn't always been like this... just recently started it and they say that they haven't really done anything different recently to it. They have adaware and antivirus software on it but housekeeping not that great. I have cleaned up as best I can. HDD is not that fragmented and I have cleared out as much garbage as I can get away with.

A Spyware Doctor scan showed they had 147 "infections" one of which was "Trojan Pakes.A" but as that was just a trial version it did not allow us to delete anything.

I cleared out all their Internet history and temp internet and cookie files and did another sweep today with Spyware Doctor trial today and it only found 14 infections one being a Bd dialer but no mention of the Pakes.A.
I have done an online scan with Bitdefender and it found a generic sdbot which it deleted. I have also done a scan with with VundoFix which found nothing.

I have tagged a Hijackthis logfile below (done after all of the above was carried out).

I would appreciate very much if anyone would be kind enough to check over it and see if they spot anything which they find dodgy.

Many thanks.

Hi Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay in coming back. The log below from the virus scan crashed when it tried to clean/disinfect so I am running it again just in case but thought I would log it just in case when I do run it again it has cleaned everything out this first time (hope that makes sense) Scanning Report Saturday, March 17, 2007 12:22:35 - 13:39:32 Computer name: MARY-1YVFXLO1RW Scanning type: Scan system for viruses, rootkits, spyware Target: C:\ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Result: 14 malware found Tracking Cookie (spyware) System (Disinfected) System System System (Submitted) System System System System System W32/Malware (virus) C:\PROGRAM FILES\BT BROADBAND HELP\VENDORS\BTBB\CONTENT\TEMPLATE\DRIVEN_DEV\BROADBANDASST\CPE.EXE (Submitted) C:\PROGRAM FILES\BT BROADBAND HELP\VENDORS\BTBB\CONTENT\TEMPLATE\DRIVEN_DEV\BROADBANDASST\RDW.EXE (Submitted) C:\PROGRAM FILES\BT BROADBAND HELP\VENDORS\BTBB\CONTENT\TEMPLATE\DRIVEN_DEV\BROADBANDASST\RMDW.EXE (Submitted) W32/Spybot.AKKQ (virus) C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\TFTP2208 (Submitted) Win32.Welchia.B (spyware) System -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Statistics Scanned: Files: 31414 System: 4539 Not scanned: 3 Actions: Disinfected: 1 Renamed: 0 Deleted: 0 None: 13 Submitted: 5 Files not scanned: C:\PAGEFILE.SYS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\DEFAULT C:\WINDOWS\SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION\EVENTCACHE\{04DBC3C6-FA86-453D-B1B2-D0AA0F2F3676}.BIN -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Options Scanning engines: F-Secure Libra: 2.4.2, 2007-03-16 F-Secure AVP: 7.0.171, 2007-03-16 F-Secure Orion: 1.2.37, 2007-03-16 F-Secure Blacklight: 1.0.53, 0000-00-00 F-Secure Draco: 1.0.35, 0260-02-44 F-Secure Pegasus: 1.19.0, 2007-02-14 Scanning options: Scan defined files: COM EXE SYS OV? THis included a SDBOT and a BTbot and an autodialler. I see from the above file though that we still seem to have some of these. I will Run F-Secure again and then Hijackthis and post both logs for you to look at - hopefully it won't hang at the last minute this time. The PC is definately running much faster since I did the Safemode virus scan and CWS scan. Just a bit perplexed that the above 2 viruses are still on it despite virus and malware scans in SAFEMODE. Thanks for your help

Hi thanks again

Finally managed to get F-Secure to scan and disinfect. I think one of the infected files was showing in a help file of BT help and I noticed that there is a BTHelpNotifier.exe process running in the ask manager. I shut this down and made a third attempt with F-secure and this time it made a full clean and disinfect without hanging. Log as below - I notice however that the BTHelpNotifier.exe process has reappeared in taskmanager so i don't know if this is a genuine process (my friends are with BT Broadband) or whether this is the source of some of the problems?

We still have a few bad guys onboard.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Updating] syswr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Updating] syswr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [win update] wupfyny.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Updating] syswr.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete these Files if listed:
syswr.exe
wupfyny.exe

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

New Hijack log as requested. The PC is performing much faster although some programs are still a little slow to start up when we click their s/cuts but my friends assure me that this was fairly normal. They appear to think that the PC is now performing MUCH faster.

You can remove any programs I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there:

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Listen... I cannot thank you enough for your help. This was my next door neighbours computer which I was trying to help them out with (with a lot of help from you) and they pass on their very best regards for your help. I will pass them on your tips and links to help "educate" them on better housekeeping - although I must say they do have up-to-date AVG. I will now start on my PC which hopefully will be in a bit better shape as I do run a virus scanner and antispyware regularly but I'm sure there will still be stuff lurking there somewhere. I'm hoping to join the classroom (already applied about 10 days ago) so that I can repay the favour and help a lot more people (on here and friends) to get rid of the scourge of malware/spyware. Thanks again!
