Hello,

For the last week I’ve been having problems with a malicious Trojan. I run SpyBot, McAfee and Trojan Hunter but it won’t get rid off it. It just keeps on reinstalling itself. Two files in particular seem to be causing problems (based on Security Task Manager): nnnlkif.dll and cbaax.dll. I can’t delete them – even in Safe Mode – because they are being used by Windows.

Whenever I get online I get bombarded with popups. Even when I’m not connected to the Internet, my computer runs at an unbearably slow speed. Please help me since I don’t know what to do anymore.

Below is my HijackThis log file:

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

double-click the My Computer
on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time..

Next:

Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on. Please reboot your computer.
  • Please post a new HijackThis log using the Add Reply Button below.

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

Hello.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. I really appreciate your help.

I followed your instructions and everything worked fine. I did receive the following error message but I doubt it's significant: "Cannot import C:\VundoFix.reg: error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error"

Here is the new HijackThis log

I did it but two of the entries reappeared:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:

O23 - Service: windows file explorer (explorer) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\ssms.exe (file missing)

The file C:\WINNT\ssms.exe does not seem to exist.

The computer seems to be working alright. No popups and the computer speed is back to normal as well.

Be sure to visit windows updates and get SP4 for your W2K OS, your 1 service pack behind.

You can remove any programs I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there:

Log looks good :D

1.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98/Me/2000, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.
In Windows XP, on the taskbar, click Start > My Computer.

2.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98, on the View menu, click Folder Options.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, check Hide file extensions for known file types.

3.Do one of the following:
In Windows 98, in the Advanced Settings box, under the "Hidden files" folder, unclick Show all files.
In Windows Me/2000/XP, check Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, unclick Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. There's also a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
