Hi, my PC has been a bit sluggish of recent and I've experienced several crashes of explorer and PC cease ups. Also, word & excel files very slow to open when I click on the filename (but OK when opened from within the programs). PC slow to boot up. Also programs seem slow for spec of PC (Intel P4 3.2GHz 2Gb RAM)

I have several protection software running (McAfee, Spyware Doctor, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Windows Defender - are they all compatible ?).

Please can someone check my logfile (below) and advise on any required action?
Many thanks
Alan

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

I am not looking at anything serious on your log, not to say something could be hiding from us. Lets do a few things to clean you up and then I need you to run a spyware scan that may show if something is hidden.

We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the fix.

To disable Real-Time Protection:
  • Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection >Options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

You also need to go in and disable Spyware Doctor from running, you can re enable it later.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Run this System Cleaner.

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
Download and Install CCleaner
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < -- After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

You may or may not need your windows XP disk for this depending on how your system is set up.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Go to Start> All Programs> Assessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to help speed up your system. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <-- Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Its important that I see the AVG log and a New HJT log please

Hi, Thanks very much for your help.
Done as suggested. Below is the AVG scan log and and my new HijackThis log.

I've not used my PC long enough to see if the explorer & internet explorer crashes still occur.

I notice in the hijack this log there a lot of processes. Are they necessary? Are they slowing the system down? I guess all the McAfee processes are OK but do I really need Maxtor, sony, Photoshop etc etc?

Cheers
Alan

alan22 :D

When you post a HJT log I need to see the entire log including the header. All those processes in your log are needed for windows to run.

I am still not looking at anything bad and all AVG found was a cookie. Lets run the free online scan from Panda and if its clean than I can refer you to some windows support sites that deal with slow computers.

Again disable both Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor for the scan to run effectively

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
  • A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
  • If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
  • Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
  • Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
  • Save the log someplace you can find
  • 12. Reboot
  • Post the Panda scan results in your next reply

Thanks again
I attempted to run the Panda scan but midway through the scan the program terminated and the window closed down. The scan had revealed one spyware before crashing.

Your log still looks fine.

Try this online scan from TrendMicro

Please run Trend Micro House Call
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • Under "Browser plug-in" Installing and using Housecall kernel, click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a prompt to install the ActiveX, click install.
  • If you are taken back to the main page, click Launching HouseCall>> button again.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
  • When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Run this quick scan and post the results.
Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Post the results of both scans please

Hi, thanks again. I've run both Trend Micro House Call & Backlight. Neither program uncovered any problems. House Call did not produce a log. Log for Backlight below. 03/18/07 18:10:29 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.55 initialized 03/18/07 18:10:29 [Info]: OS: 5.1 build 2600 (Service Pack 2) 03/18/07 18:10:29 [Note]: 7019 4 03/18/07 18:10:29 [Note]: 7005 0 03/18/07 18:10:36 [Note]: 7006 0 03/18/07 18:10:36 [Note]: 7011 3028 03/18/07 18:10:36 [Note]: 7026 0 03/18/07 18:10:36 [Note]: 7026 0 03/18/07 18:10:43 [Note]: FSRAW library version 1.7.1021 03/18/07 18:15:44 [Note]: 2000 1012 03/18/07 18:24:10 [Note]: 7007 0 It seems there is nothing sinister at work here, but PC still seems a tad sluggish with some programs slow to open. Here is some info for you to read that may help.

It's Not Always Malware

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
