Every 10-15 minutes a porn download pop up window appears. It downloads into to the Windows Temp folder and installs a desktop icon. I've used Spybot, Ad-aware, Zone Alarm antivirus, ASO to clean the registry. I've also deleted the files in the Temp folder. I decided to use HijackThis and fixed some problems. It didn't work. I don't know ho else to get rid of it. It seems to have slowed down the PC quite a bit. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. My logfile is below. Thank you. ********************************* Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 10:30:22 PM, on 3/6/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5700.0006) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2\schedul2.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\cisvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Intuit\QUICKB~1\QBDBMgrN.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wscntfy.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe C:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_S4I2L1.EXE C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Unload\hpqcmon.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\PROGRA~1\BILLPS~1\WINPAT~1\winpatrol.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_11\bin\jusched.exe C:\WINDOWS\VM305_STI.EXE C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImage\TrueImageMonitor.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2\schedhlp.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\U3\U3Launcher\LaunchU3.exe C:\Program Files\Nikon\PictureProject\NkbMonitor.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate\qbupdate.exe C:\Program Files\interMute\SpamSubtract\SpamSub.exe C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ymsgr_tray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cidaemon.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX01.313\HijackThis.exe C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\win73.tmp.exe C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\win74.tmp.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] "C:\Program Files\support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe" /server O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet /keeploaded /nodetect O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EPSON Stylus CX6400] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\E_S4I2L1.EXE /P19 "EPSON Stylus CX6400" /O6 "USB001" /M "Stylus CX6400" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CamMonitor] c:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\Unload\hpqcmon.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoTKit] C:\hp\bin\AUTOTKIT.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~1\mimboot.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinPatrol] C:\PROGRA~1\BILLPS~1\WINPAT~1\winpatrol.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_11\bin\jusched.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BigDog305] C:\WINDOWS\VM305_STI.EXE VIMICRO USB PC Camera (ZC0305) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zone Labs Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TrueImageMonitor.exe] C:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImage\TrueImageMonitor.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Acronis Scheduler2 Service] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2\schedhlp.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NVIEW] rundll32.exe nview.dll,nViewLoadHook O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Hi Rim,

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Looks like you've got one of the Vundo varients, this one hides some of its processes from HJT. To view them we have to re-name HJT. As you also have HJT running from a temp folder we need to move it as well, I've written a little bat file to make this easier for you.
  • Click Start > Run type Notepad.exe click OK.
  • This will open a Notepad file on your computer.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the code box below to the open Notepad file.
@echo off
if not exist "C:\Program Files\HJT" md "C:\Program Files\HJT"
move "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\Rar$EX01.313\HijackThis.exe" "C:\Program Files\HJT"
ren "C:\Program Files\HJT\HijackThis.exe" FredFlintstone.exe
CD\
"C:\Program Files\HJT\FredFlintstone.exe"

  • Click on Format and make sure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Save as MoveHJT.bat
  • Save as file type All Files.
Now double click on MoveHJT.bat to move and re-name HijackThis.

Run HJT (FredFlintstone) and send me the log please.

Hi Rim,

Seems the bat file didn't run properly for some reason (could be due to it being in a temp folder), your HJT is still running from a Temp location.

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Rar$EX00.953\HijackThis.exe

Gonna have to do this manually.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe, and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Close Hijack This.
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Hijack This and re-name HijackThis.exe to FredFlintstone.exe
  • Now run a scan with FredFlintstone (HJT) and send me the log please.
The desktop icon won't work because you've changed the file name, so you'll have to launch it direct from C:\Program Files\Hijack This

Hi Rim,

Well I didn't see quite what I expected to.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any of these (if found):

Oin
Yazzle by Oin
Purityscan by Oin
Snowballwars by Oin
or anything similar with Oin or Outerinfo in it.
Zolero
Tizzletalk
MediaTickets
Cowabanga

and any other programs you didn't install or don't recognize - if your not sure please ask first.

Download and run OiUninstaller.exe

Tutorial for the uninstaller if needed

Run a scan with HJT and check the following item (if found).

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmhv32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmhv32.dll

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove it.

Now install MVPS HOSTS:

Create a new folder somewhere you can find it, and name it Hosts.

Download and unzip hosts.zip to that folder.

Open up the Hosts folder and double-click on the mvps.bat file, it will rename your present HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the new HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine. It happens very quickly so don't blink!
  • Click Start > Run and type cleanmgr then click OK.
  • This will bring up the Disk Cleanup window.
  • Check the following entries.
    • Temporary Internet Files.
    • Recycle Bin.
    • Temporary Files.
  • Click OK.
  • When a prompt pops up click Yes.
Reboot your computer please..

Download AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Launch AVG by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update AVG to the latest definition files.
  • At the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
[*]The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
[*]When updates are completed, close AVG.
[/list]If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG.
AVG manual updates

Run a scan with AVG.
  • Click on Scanner
    • Click on the Settings tab, and set the following settings.
      • How to act
      • Click on Recommended actions, and set to Quarantine.
    • How to scan
      • Check all options.
    • Possibly unwanted software.
      • Check all options.
    • Reports
      • Check Automatically generate report after every scan.
      • Uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • What to scan

Hi Gary, There were no OIN or Outer Info programs. Also, there was an error on the uninstaller link. I did everything else in your instructions. I've included the AVG report and the new HijackThis logfile. Hi Rim,

I've just checked and both the tool and tutorial are both available.

Did you install the MVPS Hosts file before you attempted to download OiUninstaller.exe, because it blocks access to www.outerinfo.com the site that you download the tool from. That is why I always ask you to perform all actions in the order given.

outerinfo.com are the people who produced one of the things that infected you. Normally we don't recommend that people use removal tools from such companies, but I've used this tool a lot and it does remove the infection completely, and does not leave anything behind which could be used to re-infect you.

OK, to access the site we're going to need to edit your Hosts file, easiest way is to use a Hosts editor.

Download HostsXpert 3.7 and unzip it to your computer, somewhere where you can find it.
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the Make Hosts Writable button.
  • In the Search for String box type www.outerinfo.com
  • Click on the >> button to find it.
  • This will highlight the entry in the left pane.
  • Click on Delete Selected Line, then when the box pops up click OK.
  • Click on the Make Hosts Read Only button.
  • Exit the programme.
You should now be able to download and run OiUninstaller.exe

Follow the instructions for its use here:- Tutorial for the uninstaller

When finished, add www.outerinfo.com back to your Hosts file as follows.
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the Make Hosts Writable button.
  • Type www.outerinfo.com in the box next to the + button (it should automatically add 127.0.0.1)
  • Click on the + button.
  • Click on the Make Hosts Read Only button.
  • Exit the programme.
Now run a scan with HJT and check the following entry (if found).

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmhv32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmhv32.dll

Close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove it.

Make sure that you can see hidden files and folders.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files a pop up will appear, answer Yes
  • Click OK.
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode
  • If your computer is running, shut down Windows, then turn the power off.
  • Wait 30 seconds, then turn the computer on, and begin tapping the F8 key.
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. (If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again).
  • Select Safe Mode using the up/down arrow keys.
  • Press Enter.
  • Log on with an account that has administrator priviledges (NOT the account named Administrator).
Now find and delete this file (if still present)

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winmhv32.dll

BOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: You must be using Internet Explorer as your browser as it will be necessary to install an Active X component to your computer.

Important If you have previously used Kaspersky Online Scanner (before 8th Aug 2006), you will have to uninstall the old version using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before you can use the new version.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post please, along with a new HJT log.
Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

Hi Gary, I downloaded HostsXpert. It was version 3.8. I followed the instructions; however, I'm still unable to download the Outerinfo Uninstaller. What should I try next? Rim

Hi Rim, Follow the rest of the instructions in my last post, and then send me the Kaspersky log and the new HJT log. The Oiuninstaller may not be necessary, I was being thorough that's all, the Kaspersky and HJT logs will tell me if the infection is still present after you've removed the HJT entry and file, in which case we'll try again.

Hi Rim,

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check this item.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winmhv32 - winmhv32.dll (file missing)

Close all open windows then click Fix Checked to remove it.
  • Click Start > Run and type cleanmgr then click OK.
  • This will bring up the Disk Cleanup window.
  • Check the following entries.
    • Downloaded Program Files.
    • Temporary Internet Files.
    • Recycle Bin.
    • Temporary Files.
  • Click OK.
  • When a prompt pops up click Yes.
  • Download combofix.exe by sUBs
  • Alternate Download
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Run another Kaspersky scan please.

Now can you send me the following logs please:
  • Combofix log (C:\ComboFix.txt)
  • Kaspersky log
  • New HJT log

Hi Rim,

HJT log looks clear now, just a couple of things to attend to from your Kaspersky log.

Find and delete the following files.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\1868920202
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mdhgkfm.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pkzwwjl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\xbnojle.dll

Let me know if you have any problems

Your System Restore points are infected, but provided you don't do a restore they can't re-infect you. Once I've heard back from you regarding the files I've asked you to delete I'll give you details on how to clear your restore points, and how to secure your system to prevent future infection.
