Hi,

I would consider myself to have somewhat advanced computer knowledge. I have handled spyware, hijacks, malware, etc. in the past on my own.

However now I'm stumped. My problem I don't know where and/or what to clean.

The symptoms: (regular adware pains)
When changing URL's the computer will hang 10-12 seconds before loading the page. New IE windows will open with URL's like laughnetwork.com (most of the times), stupidvideos.com and some others mostly video hosting sites.

Windows seem to only popup when changing URL's, although it seem to freeze several seconds every now and then.

Adaware finds nothing
SpyBot Congratulates me for have no threats found.
AVG Antispware finds nothing
Mcafee Stinger finds nothing
CWShredder finds nothing
Norton Antivirus finds nothing (This is the only one running, I shut this down for any other scans.)

In one of my first scans Adaware found a few, one of them SmithFraud. I had Adaware fix it on reboot. I downloaded the SmithFraudFix and it finds nothing. I ran the repair and clean registry anyway.

I tried the online F-secure scan however it returns an error so I don't have results from that.

I ran hijack this and I found only one instance of netdde.dll and had HJT fix it.

Now my HJT log (enclosed) seems clean. I believe I recognize every entry.

My question, where from here.

Welcome to the forum

I don't see any 02s 0r 020s in the log?????

Please right click on HiJackThis.exe and rename it to abc.exe, now rescan the system (double click on abc.exe) and post or look at that log.
Some malware plays with HiJackThis.exe so it doesn't show the malware.

I ran hijack this and I found only one instance of netdde.dll and had HJT fix it.

Did you delete the file netdde.dll or is it still on the system?
Where was the file located? need path and was it a 02 or 020 entry?
If you still have the file......
upload it HERE for a free scan - let me know the results.

If not.....

Please download SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free)

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes, Let it through your firewall!
Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
  • Close browsers before scanning
  • Scan for tracking cookies
  • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Ignore System Restore/Volume Information on ME and XP
  • Please leave the others unchecked.
  • Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click
Yes.

To retrieve the removal information - please do the following:
  • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
  • Click Preferences . Click the Statistics/Logs tab .
  • Under Scanner Logs , double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log .
  • It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
  • Please highlight everything , then right-click and choose copy.
  • Click close and close again to exit the program.
Now please paste the removal information along with a fresh HijackThis log in your reply. If it's a large log, you may need several replies to post it.

Hi,

After reboot post SUPERAntiSpyware Scan, I haven't seen any popups yet. I can't rule it out for another hour or 2 since they were somewhat infrequent.

However when changing URL's the computer will hang for several seconds before loading page. It seems like its getting busy sending traffic or trying to load something.

The netdde.dll was deleted, and does not currently exist on the computer.

It was a O15, O16, or O17 I don't remember exactly, definitely not O2, or O20

I did the SUPERAntiSpyware Scan here is the scan log

OK, we have to start somewhere.

You do have Viewpoint Manager Service on the system which we recommend uninstalling - it's now considered spyware and was installed without your knowledge.

If you choose to uninstall it.......

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
------------------

also clean out your temp files.......
Download and run ATF Cleaner - hit "select all" then just uncheck "cookies" (uncheck cookies is optional - leave it checked if you want to delete all cookies) then click "empty selected" That will clear out all the temp files on the system.

----------------

Open up SuperAntiSpyware > Preferences > General and Start-up > Start-up Options > Uncheck > Start SAS when Windows Starts.
"SAS free" provides no real time protection so there's no need for it to be running, I suggest you keep the program and update regularly - you can use it to scan for malware. It's an excellent program. When you want to start it - just double click on the SAS icon.

--------------

Also it looks like you have real time protection with Symantec (please correct me if I'm wrong), so you can disable AVG Anti-Spyware by.......

Open AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the multi-colored box emblazoned with an 'S' in the system tray.
In the 'Resident Shield' section, toggle the AVG Anti-Spyware active protection 'off' by clicking 'Change state' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
When you reboot - AVG Anti-Spyware will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the Resident Shield".
Reply 'no' and set it to 'inactive'.

------------------

Try this tweak to speed up the web.....

1> Go to Start > Run (type) services.msc > OK
2> Scroll down to DNS Client, Right-click and select: Properties
3> Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
4> Select: Manual, click Apply/Ok and restart.
(The default is Auto - you can always change it back)

Let me know, MrC

Oops - I almost forgot the most important thing...

Your logs indicate that you have or had a Vundo infection, so lets run the tool to detect and eliminate it from your system:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at
reboot.

Hi, I took your advice, and removed the Viewpoint's. (I run a reporting tool from sonicwall called Sonicwall Viewpoint, I mistook that for the one installed but obviously that does not have a media player). I had already set SuperAntiSpyware not to run at stratup. AVG Anti-Spyware had been set not to run actively. And I change the DNS Client service to be manualy loaded. When I saw that SuperAntiSpyware has detected Vundo I downloaded the Symantec Vundo removal tool and it did not find anything. Upon your suggestion I also downloaded VundoFix and found no trace either. Sorry it takes so long to update the thread since the computer still hangs for several seconds every now and then and after awhile just becomes unstable. I had to run vundofix several times before it finished a full scan. Although I don't get popups anymore, I now get an a runtime error that reads "A runtime error has occurred do you want to debug" Line 7 (or some other #) Error: Object required The computer is just unbearable.

In IE go to tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing > Look for "Disable Script Debugging" > make sure it is checked.

Can you post a fresh HJT log, MrC

Please disable AVG Anti-Spyware Guard for now:
Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:
AVG Anti-Spyware Guard

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

-----------------

Close ALL programs down, leaving ONLY HijackThis running - Click Scan and.....
Place a check against the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Synchronization Manager] mobsync.exe /logon
O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} - https://components.v...wcase|viewpoint

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot and see how it is.

If no improvement I would say we're looking at a Operating System problem.
Let me know, MrC
