Removable USB media visable but not usable

For several weeks I have not been able to load/upload data through my USB internal card reader.
This problem extends to digital cameras, MP3 players and mobile phones.
All these devices are visible in My Computer, Windows Explorer and the Device Manager of Win XP Pro SP2.
The problem occurs regardless of which USB port or cable is used.
The same ports and cables work correctly with non-mass storage type devices eg printer, webcam etc.
The Share and Security options are not visible if I right click an affected drive unlike all the other drives.
Simple file sharing is disabled.

Previous to a bit of tinkering:-
If I did not insert a memory card and double click on either of the Removable Disks from 'My Computer' the message "Please insert a disk into drive [drive letter:]" is displayed along with the hour glass.
Click Cancel.
If I then inserted a memory card and double click on the respective Removable Disk from 'My Computer' the error message "[drive letter:] is not accessible. Access is denied, along with the hour glass mouse pointer".
Click Cancel.
If I then removed the memory card and double click the same Removable Disk icon the same error message re-appears, even though no card is inserted. Double clicking any other Removable Disk icon brings up the "Please insert a disk into drive [drive letter:]" message, that is unless I've previously inserted the relevant card type then I get the previous error message "[drive letter:] is not accessible. Access is denied.", along with the hour glass mouse pointer".
This situation continues until I disconnect the device, and once reconnected the system appears to reset but the original problem still exists.
If I connect my mobile phone I get the message "Please insert a disk into drive [drive letter:]" .
If I connect my digital camera i get the error message "[drive letter:] is not accessible. Access is denied.", along with the hour glass mouse pointer".

Since the tinkering, (which was to set Removable Storage from manual to automatic Startup type in the Component Services and Services through Administrator Tools, these have since been set back to manual) I get the following messages:-
"[drive letter] is not accessible. The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.", plus the hour glass if I double left click a drive with no card in it.
"[drive letter:] is not accessible. Access is denied, along with the hour glass mouse pointer.", if I double click a drive with a card inserted.

All the devices listed above work correctly when connected to other PC's.

Someone from another forum suggests the computer has been hacked and that my access rights/permissions have been changed, but as far as I can see they appear to be OK.

I'm no computer buff although I do like tinkering and perhaps I've tinkered to much?
