My friends laptop has been having problems with the CPU usage. Whenever she opens up iTunes or any other music programs, the CPU usage jumps to 100% making it impossible to do anything on the laptop. Recently it has been doing the same thing right after start-up making it very difficult to do anything at all. If you could take a look and see if there is anything we can change, that would be great! Thanks!

Zebadiah :D

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

You do have some issues going on that we need to fix, please post a new HJT log because your current log is a little old.

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Edit> Select All.....Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use Posted Imageand not Posted Image
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

The forum is staffed by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

Alright, I did as you recommended, but I had a couple problems. After I ran the AVG scan, when I tried to save the report it gave me an error message and closed the program. I was also unable to find the angelex or the procmsg.exe. When I booted in normal mode I noticed that the computer was still using 100% CPU. I had to restart, now it is running, but still slow. Here is the new HJT log. Thanks!

Your log still looks fine. You used msconfig to change the start up, by doing that it may not be showing everything on your log.

Go to Start> Run and type in msconfig and then Enter, go to the Startup tab and select Normal Startup and ok your way out of the program.

Go back into AVG and under reports you will find the report from the scan. Post it if you can. Besides it cleaning your system, its important that i see the report as most times if there is something bad on your system it will give me a clue and point to an infection that may be hidding. Without the report your tieing my hands.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 11 <--This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Lets move HJT to its own folder so that anything we change won't be lost.

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis

There are infections being written to evade Hijackthis, so go to where you have HJT installed and right click on the HJT Icon Posted Image and rename it to Scanner.exe, run the program to Scan and Save a Log File and post a new log into this thread.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Let me see the Blacklight log and a new HJT log with it renamed and the AVG report if you can.

I looked under Reports in AVG, but there was nothing in there. It does show that I ran a scan, though. Is this something I should run in safe mode again? The blacklight did not find anything when I ran it, but here is the log

This may be the problem.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Remove this entry with HJT
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Generic Proc] procmsg.exe

Highlight the file with the complete path inside the Quote Box and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

C:\Windows\System32\procmsg.exe

  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure Single File is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion...Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

Post the SDBot log and a New HJT log please

When running Killbox I got an error message that said that the file had been deleted by an outside source, but I restarted manually anyway.

Good Morning :D

You did well  It looks like its gone.

The free version of Download Accelerator comes with bundled spyware, the paid version does not so its your call to decide if you want to keep it or not.

The rest of you log looks fine, how are things running now?

Thank you for all your help. Things seem to be running much smoother now. Thanks for the heads up about DAP. I only needed it to speed up the Java download, so now I will get rid of it. Thanks again!!

Zebadiah :D

Glad things are better

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
