I originally posted a request for assistance with an apparent trojan in one of my Windows/System32 files (joyNic.dll). My Trend Micro antivirus program continually shows I have a TROJ_CONHOOK.AA in this file. I cannot quarantine it or delete it. I don't know whether this is a legitimate threat, or not.

I received a response from LD Tate suggesting I download HijackThis software, run a scan, and send him the log via this forum. I did this, but was unable to transmit the log to him. Everytime I hit the ADDREPLY button, I received an error message indicating I am not authorized to do this. Any suggestions?

Below you will find a pasted copy of the original posts:

I previously posted this in another forum, and was directed to post it here. I am currently using Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2007 Internet Security. It warns me that I have a TROJ_CONHOOK.AA trojan in a particular Windows operating file (joyNic.dll). The Trend Micro program is unable to clean, quarantine, or remove this trojan. When I search for the file, using Windows tools, I can locate it, but when I attempt to delete it, I receive a message indicating it cannot be removed, since it is involved with another program. A few questions:

1) Does anyone have familiarity with this trojan, and if so, is it a true threat?

2) Trend Micro did provide me with a link to their "System Cleaner," but the steps were a bit too overwhelming for me, since I am not exactly computer savvy, and fear that I will totally crash my system. Is there a relatively simple way to resolve this problem?

Thanks

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

you can get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from http://downloads.mal...om/HJTsetup.exe.

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here please use the [Add Reply] button below.

Please use the IPB Image Button below to reply.

A thought ---- should I simply cut and paste the HJT scan log and post it as a new topic, or is this not an acceptable way to do it?

You should be able to post the log here. When the scan is finished it should open notepad, Copy / paste it here:

Here is the scan log from HJT. I also used the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software scan to scan my Windows/System32 files, and it indicates no malicious software. Could the Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 software be indicating a non-existant problem?

You have some bad guys.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now
    " link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select " "Quarantine" .".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.

Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

Thanks for your quick response and suggestions. I felt a bit intimidated by the procedures, and ended up downloading a 30-day free trial of NOD32 AV. It not only found and removed the TROJAN_CONHOOK.AA, but also a few other viruses that my updated version of Trend Micro IS missed. The Trend Micro software would warn me of the TROJAN_CONHOOK.AA, but couldn't quarantine or remove it. No such problem with the NOD32. I was impressed. Thanks again. BigAlt
