Posted 23 February 2007 - 03:23 PM

I left the computer for 14 days. During that period I had Spy-ware Doctor, Avg Anti-Spy-ware 7.5 and F secure Internet security running.
The only one who used the computer during that time was my brother who says he did nothing.

When I fist started up my computer yesterday, many odd things happened:

1. First, it took a while until all processes would actually load. Few times (after entering windows and the user) the start-up process (the load of all the software and processes) failed and just stopped, even without the load of all the desktop features like task bar and icons.
Few times I got messages like this, with different processes-

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services encoutered a problem and needed to close
(I clicked details and it said its related to these files -
c:\DOCUME~1\Guy\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER341f.dir00\appcompat.txt
c:\DOCUME~1\Guy\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER341f.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp)

2. Also, 3 minutes after the start-up, the windows (xp) task-bar tends to "flip" to "windows old fashioned look taskbar".

3. F-secure uses many processes. yesterday I found MANY more of them.

4. svchost.exe is the most noticeable problem. Last log I posted I thing I had 1. Now I have like 6-10 svchost.exe's and each startup, one of them uses 101k memory and lots of CPU memory untill I end that process.

I tried to make a HJT log after all the processes were being loaded and before my computer will stuck because of that process. I hope I was sucessful.
I took another log after I closed that process just to be sure.

5. Probably just a stupid thing, but I also have 1 or 2 error sounds when the windows(after entering the user) is loaded. No message is recieved.

I had few more odd things happenning, but are less remarkable, I think.
Maybe some aren't related to anything importent, but note that none of them happened 14 days ago, and my brother didn't do anything other than using the browser, if at all.
I also did a system restore which helped with the first problem it seems.
I deleted F-secure which seemed problematic because all of its processes. Although I'm quite sure its not a program bug. I now use nod32 and am about to get Zone alarm.

I really hope you can help me with this. I'm not even sure its a trojan as I can't find it with scanning. But SOMETHING is happening to my computer.
Note that many processes here I don't even remember from before, although they don't seem bad.
Thanks a lot,
Guy

Thats before I closed the svchost.exe that took all my memory.

OK I FOUND A SPYWARE!! Good work spyware doctor:P AVG didn't found it:\ "Trojan.Popuper". Don't know if thats the problem My trial is over, maybe its like all those spyware programs that tells you you have a trojan so that you will buy the software to remove it? .....\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats (thats the path). "Hijacks the default IE settings and changes homepage. appears as a security alert notifying users that their PC has been compromised and then downloads rogue antispyware"

We are sorry that your topic was overlooked. The new infections that are coming out require us to spend more time on each topic, that and the lack of qualified helpers means that some of the topics will get passed over. Yours was one of those.

The reason for closing this topic is because you would not have been notified, should somebody have replied. Because the thread had gone 20 days without a reply.

Should you return to the forums and still require assistance, please started a thread (topic). After doing so please post in this thread, with a link to this topic, and the new one you started. :wavey:

To help keep your PC clean follow the recommendations in Tony Klein's article So how did I get infected in the first place?
