I need help so much! Bought this e-machine three months ago because of its speed - 2.6 Ghtz - from work. Been "cleaning" it since, but the hijack/popups only started 3 weeks ago.

I have McAffee, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Doctor and Pest Patrol.

E-mails do not cause a problem (respond there if you can), but as soon as my browser - or my website radio tuner with the Ads during commercial become active, popup city! Sometimes they stop after only a few, sometimes as many as 26 had to be closed.

Any and all help is appreciated. Apologizing in advance if I missed anything, but very hard to read instructions when the page keeps changing!

Welcome to Tom Coyote .

Your infected with the Vundo Trojan, this is what we need to do. You may want to print this out or copy and save it to notepad so you can read it as we will be offline for most of the fix.


Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop.

• Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
• Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
• On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
• Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
• Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
• Under Reports
• Select Automatically generate report after every scan
• Un-Select Only if threats were found
• Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <-- Do not run the scan yet.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.




Boot your computer into Safemode

• Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
• As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
• This will bring up a menu.
• Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
• Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

• Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
• AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
• Once the scan is complete do the following:
• If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
• Next select the Reports icon at the top.
• Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
• make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
• Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Reboot normally

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Download HostsXpert v3.7

• Unzip HostXpert to your desktop
• Open up the HostXpert program.
• Make sure that the "Make Hosts Writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
• Click Create Back Up
• Then click on Restore Microsoft's Host Files
• Close the HostXpert program

Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < -- After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes

You should never have more than one Anti Virus program running and you don't so your ok in that department. With Spyware Doctor and Pest Patrol, you really have no need for AVG although I think its a better program than the other two combined. But thats just my opinion. Spybot is good for removing bad entires and it won't clog up your system.

Spybot and Spyware Doctor both seemed to be blocking the fixes on Hijackthis. Once I removed them, the corrections updated. I now have only McAffee, Pest Patrol and AVG Antispyware running my system.

Java was deleted, updated and verified with no problems. I turned down the Google toolbar for the time being.

Anything else? I'm pretty amazed at this point...

We need to disable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy as to not interfere with the fix.

• Open Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools> Resident and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer

This is showing me that you may have had Panda AV at one time, if you uninstalled it it may have left part of it running.

Look in your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel for Panda and uninstall it if present. If its not present in Add Remove, then lets disable it.

• Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
• Scroll down to Panda Process Protection Service
• Double Click that service to open it.
• Click on Stop Service.
• Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
• OK your way out of the program.

The rest of your log looks fine, let me know how things are running after disabling Panda. Post a new HJT log and let me take another look.

As you can see,the previous "unknown" 016 entried refer to Java, and ther seemsto be a new 03 "no name, no file".

Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyware Doctor , if these where uninstalled than yes, fix the 04 entries related to them.

Spybot Search and Destroy is a great program that will block bad downloads, you should reinstall it, it uses no system resources so won't bog you down.

The 03 entry with no file is related to Mcafee so leave it be.

Here is the tutorial for Spybot. I have had this on my system for years. I do not use the TeaTimer, but I do Immunize whenever there are updates

You can use the links in my signature to download and install Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

• During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
  
• Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
  
• Then to Updates Search for Updates
  
• If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
  
• Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
  
• Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
  
• Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
  
• Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
  
• Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
  
• Let it scan your system
  
• Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.
  
• Reboot your computer.

All I use is a stand alone AV (Norton),

• Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  
• Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
