SVCHOST peggin the CPU & Network traffic never idle

My PC has been acting strange the last month or 2. When I turn it on, the CPU stays pegged at 100% for about 2 minutes and then does the same again once in a while. The running processes show that svchost.exe is the one using up all the CPU. Also, My ZoneAlarm system tray icon shows that my network traffic is never idle & the Windows Task Manager confirms this.

I've completed all the prerequisites. I've also scanned w/ AVG Antivirus & Anti-Spyware, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender, CCleaner, MS Malicious Software Removal utility, AntiVir Personal antivirus.

I'd also like to kill all non-essential processes. Your help is very much appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the forum. Please do not delete anything unless instructed to. Looks like you are running 2 anti-virus programs. That can cause all types of problems. I suggest you do this: 1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. 2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove either Grisoft AVG or AntiVir PersonalEdition Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi & thanks so much for reviewing my case.

As soon as I turn my PC on, the CPU runs at 100% for about 3-4 minutes still. According to Task Manager - Processes tab, SVCHOST.exe is the one still hogging the CPU. It also checks for WIndows Updates every time because I see the yellow shield in the System Tray. The tooltip says Windows Update when I hover the mouse over it. This same behavior might happen again after it's been running for a while.

I think I resolved the issue with the network traffic never idle, though. I uninstalled the Antivir virus scanner & it's not doing it anymore. Perhaps it was polling for updates non-stop?

Something I neglected to mention the first time was that my PC reboots several times. Sometimes when starting it up, & at other times as well. I believe this may be a hardware issue though, since it makes a clicking noise as it tries to start up repeatedly. This happens before it even gets to the Windows XP screen, at the very beginning of bootup. Hard drive? Power supply? If you can confirm it's not malware causing this I could work on the hardware.

My mistake is that in the past, I have run the CCleaner "Issues" feature many, many times. I may have shot myself in the foot here & messed up my registry. I read other posts in this forum that said we shouldn't run this...

Reading other posts, I have run SDFix (scan) & found nothing, Vundofix (scan) & found nothing. I have always run or recently run (with updates):

CCleaner "Cleaner" feature
Ad-Aware (always finds at least a couple tracking cookies)
Spybot S&D
AVG Anti-virus (clean)
AVG Anti-spyware
SpywareBlaster (conflict w/AVG???)
MS Windows Malicious Software Removal (found stuff & fixed it, I don't remember what exactly)

I uninstalled Windows Defender. Maybe I'm just paranoid here?

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

You could have some corrupt windows files causing the reboots. Try this:

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
(Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

Thanks again. I installed a new hdd & reloaded the OS & it appears to be running smoothly. I'll be sure not to mess with the registry in the future. If you don't see any issues in my log, I guess we can close this 1...?

BTW: I figured out what was hogging the CPU resources; it was Microsoft Update (not Windows Update). Every time the PC is booted, Microsoft Update runs a very resource-intensive scan of your software to check for updates to everything Microsoft. I would recommend people stick to using Windows Update ('Change Settings' in the left pane of Update home page). You can always do the MS Office update separately...
