Having a lot of trouble loading some programs, including windows installer 3.1 & Quicken, plus tried to go into safe mode and computer stopped at the loading device drivers screen. Here's the log:

Hi mhinch. Welcome to TomCoyote forums! :)

You are running two real-time antivirus programs - AVG and Avast. This is counter-productive and will cause conflicts and other problems. Please uninstall one of them immediately. It doesn't matter which one - it's your choice.

You have also got WinAntiSpyware 2007 installed. This is a known 'rogue' program which we need to remove. First we need to disable SpySweeper. This is a good program, but it could interfere with our 'fix'.

Disable SpySweeper

If you have Spy Sweeper version 4:
  • Open it, Click Options over on the left, then Program options
  • Uncheck load at windows startup.
  • Over to the left, click shields and uncheck all there.
  • Uncheck home page shield.
  • Uncheck automatically restore default without notifiction.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
If you have SpySweeper version 5:
  • Open SpySweeper.
  • Click Shield Settings on the right or Shields on the left, depending what screen you're on.
  • Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
  • Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
  • Click Hosts File and uncheck all items.
  • Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
  • Close SpySweeper.
  • Reboot your computer, and check that SpySweeper is disabled.
Don't forget to re-enable SpySweeper once we have finished cleaning you computer.

RogueRemover
  • Download RogueRemover and save it on your desktop.
  • Right-click on RogueRemover.zip
  • Select Extract All…
  • When the wizard opens, click Next then Finish
  • A folder will open. Double-click on RogueRemoverInstall.exe
  • Follow the prompts to install the program
  • Run the program and select Scan
  • The program will take you through the remaining steps
  • Reboot your computer
