Google Search Redirection

I have been having problems with Google and other search engine results being redirected for a few weeks. When I click on the link I am directed to various advertsising websites. I noticed that another of your forum users had exactly the same problem and you eventually successfully removed whatever was hijacking the browser. I decide therefore to try out what you suggested for the other user. The first step was to download the Fix Wareout program and save it to desktop. I did this but when I tried to run the program I got the following error message : 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem C:\Windows\System32\AutoExecNT The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose Close to terminate. There were two buttons Close and Ignore. I tried clicking both but could not get the program to run. As this didn't seem to be working for me, I decided to just delete the Fix Wareout program. But I can't do this as I get a message 'Cannot delete - being used by another person or program'. Can you advise me firstly how to get out of this situation and offer me help as to the orginal problem of the browser hijacking. Thanks Laurence
Double click "My Computer" then your hard drive (probably C drive) and open the C:\WINDOWS folder. Go down to the "Repair" folder and double click. You should find "autoexec.nt" and "config.nt" in there. Copy these files (Ctrl+C) then go back to C:\Windows\SYSTEM32 and paste them there (Ctrl+V). It will ask you if you want to replace the old one—click "Yes". That should do it. Now try installing that program and it should work fine.
Hi there

Firstly, thanks for your prompt response to my question. I have struggling with this issue for weeks now and I am really appreciative of your help.

I managed to correct the issue with Fix Wareout and run this. I've posted a copy of the text file below. I have also posted a Start Up log from Hijack This. I have been using Hijack This for quite a long time but for some reason, when I click the option to Scan and Save Log File, I don't get a pop up text log file to save. All I get is the 'No suspicious items found' message.

Following your instructions I noted that I next had to click Start > Run > type CMD and tap enter key.
Your instruction then says to enter 'ipconfig /flushdns' . I did this but when I pressed the enter key I got an error message to say 'ipconfig is not recognised as an internal/external command, operable program or batch file'.

The command prompt line was showing as ' C:\ Documents & Settings \Laurie > '

Is this the correct command prompt ? I'm not sure it is - If not can you advise how to proceed ?

Thanks again. I do have some knowledge of PC's but feel I'm still at a fairly novice stage so thanks again for your help. I am happy to persevere to achieve a satisfactory outcome.

The instructions I gave you are for windows xp and I don't know what you have.

You can get a complete installer that installs HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis, making an entry in the start menu and also providing a desktop shortcut from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTsetup.exe.

Click on the link and select Save, save it to your desktop and double click HJTsetup.exe.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here please use the [Add Reply] button below.
Hi again. The instructions I've been following are from another thread as per link below :

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=75155

I already have the latest version of HijackThis on my PC. Should I download it again and overwrite the existing installation to correct the failure to create log files ?

Incidentally, since I ran the Fix Wareout program I am no longer getting the problem with the search redirection. Is this just a temporary cure or is the problem sorted do you think ?

I don't want to waste your valuable time if the issue is resolved.

Thanks

Laurence
I don't need a startup list.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [Add Reply].
I reinstalled HijackThis and was able to run a scan and create a logfile. Here are the results.

I have run a Google Search and the previous redirection problem from the search result links seems to have stopped.

I would be grateful though if you can tell me if I need to take any further steps.

Thanks again.
