Help! My xp sp3 pc seems to be infected with a virus that constantly redirects google and yahoo search hits to erroneous websites. Even in safemode with networking, I have been unable to run tdsskiller.exe ie nothing happens when I doubleclick to run. I already had hijackthis, so ran it and the log is attached. Also, I downloaded and ran Combofix (saved as 123.exe), which installed MS Windows Recovery Console. CF Logfile is also attached. Thanks!
Hello and Posted Image

My name is patndoris. I will be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. It will be very helpful if you follow these guidelines:
  • Malware logs are often lengthy and can take a lot of time to research and interpret. Please be patient while I review your logs.
  • Please note that there is no "Quick Fix" to modern malware infections and we may need to use several different approaches to get your system clean.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • Please follow my instructions carefully and in the order they are posted. You may also find it helpful to print out the instructions you receive.
  • Please do not run any scans or install/uninstall any applications or delete anything without being directed to do so.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone. Please stick with me till you're given the "all clear".
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
  • Please reply within 3 days. If I do not hear back from you in that time frame, I will post a reminder for you. Topics with no reply in 4 days are closed!

Please do not run any tools other than those directed as we review your logs. Running tools like Combofix prior to diagnosing what infection is on a machine can make it harder to find and remove all the files.

HijackThis has largely been replaced by other tools. Since being acquired by TrendMicro, HijackThis has not been regularly updated. Many infections are now able to hide partly, or completely from a HijackThis scan. DDS includes all the scan locations of HijackThis and more.

Download and Run DDS by sUBs

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please Please copy / paste the scan reults.

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Scan With RootKitUnHooker

  • Please choose one link and download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers and Stealth
  • Uncheck the rest. then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File > Save Report.[/b
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

If you are unable to run either of these please let me know.
Thanks Patndoris.
Downloaded DDS.SCR to the desktop, but windows is unable to execute as the dialog box states it needs to know what program created it. Unable to procede further with DDS steps of your instructions.
Ran Rootkit Unhooker as instructed although it never prompted for drive selection. I also did not receive the warning that rootkit unhooker detected a parasite within itself. Log is here:

Hmm, after completing the tasks below as you instruction, the pc sat idle for about 15min and then a warning dialog box appeared: "Security alert: Virus Alert! Application can't be started! The file rundll32.exe is damaged. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?" I clicked No and dialog box vanished. Then I logged off to await your next instructions. Thanks.
Can you please advise if you have an anti-virus program installed on your computer? From the Combofix log and the HijackThis log, it does not appear that you have one installed.

Download and Run RKill

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (Thanks to Grinler of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them.
Rkill.exe
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr
Rkill.pif

Once it is downloaded, double-click on the rkill.com in order to automatically try to stop any processes associated with rogue programs. Please be patient while the program looks for various malware programs and ends them. When it has finished, the black window will automatically close and you can continue with the next steps.

If you get a message rkill is an infection, do not be concerned. The message is just a fake warning by some rogue programs when it terminates programs that may potentially remove it. The trick is to leave the warning on the screen and then run Rkill again. By not closing the warning, this should allow you to bypass the malware trying to protect itself so that rkill can terminate the rogue processes. Continue to try running Rkill until the malware is no longer running. You will then be able to proceed with the next steps.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Download and Run DDS by sUBs

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop
Please save it as dds.exe instead of dds.scr (you may need to change the file type from screensaver to all files to do this.)
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.exe to run the tool.

If DDS will still not run, please let me know. You may reboot your machine regardless of if it runs or not. Do not delete rkill as we may need it again.
Thanks patndoris. You are correct, I do not currently have an antivirus installed. Our Norton recently expired (so i removed) and hadn't yet intalled Avast when this thing hit me! When I logged into the pc just now to continue with your latest instructions, an apparently bogus antivirus began a system scan, which I promptly terminated (by clicking X) but then several security alert/virus alerts messages appeared (eg rundll.exe is damaged, regedit is damaged). Then I ran rkill and the alert appeared that rkill is damaged. I left that warning on screen and then ran another copy (differnt name) and it successfully terminated something. I had previously installed dds.scr, so I just renamed to .exe and ran it successfully. dds.txt log is pasted below and attach.txt log is attached. Thanks! also, if it would be helpful, here is the log from the rkill termination. Thanks! This log file is located at C:\rkill.log. Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you. Otherwise you can close this log when you wish. Rkill was run on 03/07/2011 at 19:06:52. Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Processes terminated by Rkill or while it was running: C:\DOCUME~1\MCDONA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\uxcjwykgi\bmnsfrejfdi.exe Rkill completed on 03/07/2011 at 19:06:57.
If you have not rebooted your computer you can skip the Rkill directions. If you have rebooted your computer then you will need to run it again.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

DDS::
uInternet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:33554
uRun: [uaxwntjy] c:\docume~1\mcdona~1\locals~1\temp\uxcjwykgi\bmnsfrejfdi.ex

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe (which I believe you renamed 123.exe)

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe (in your case 123.exe)

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt. Please post it in your next reply.

Also, please let me know how your computer is running now.
Did as you instructed, combofix detected rootkit activity and then asked to reboot the machine to complete the disinfection. After reboot, dialog box informed an update for ComboFix was avail, so I said ok to download.

After update completed, combofix restarted and DOS window informed it was attempting to create a new system restore point, then it executed a full scan stages 1-50.

As ComboFix was completing and beginning to preparing the log report, several dialog boxes opened to say there was an application error and the program had to be terminated. Two dialog boxes appeared (1) AXTimer: ViewMgr.exe -Application Error and (2)tfswctrl.exe - Application Error and both read the same: "The instruction at "0x10078a90" referenced memory at "0x10078a90: The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program".

A 3rd box appeared this time for (3) WHSTrayApp.exe - Application Error which read: "The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000: The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program". The I clicked "OK" for each and the boxes disappeared one by one.

Then a dialog box appeared for "NotifyAlert.exe - No debugger found" which read "Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attempt to launch a JIT debugger with the following command resulted in an error code of 0x2 (2). Please check computer settings. cordbg.exe !a 0xc84 Click on Retry to have the process wait while attaching a debugger manually. Click on Cancel to abort the JIT debu request." So I clicked Retry, but nothing appeared to happen.

Finally, only the log.txt remained open on-screen, Do you want me to sent that too? Below is the pasted ComboFix.txt log. Thanks!

The log you posted is fine. Let's give TDSS Killer another try now. If it won't run on it's own, then please run RKill and try again.

Please read carefully and follow these steps.

Can you please also let me know if you are still getting redirects?
Also, in regards to your question re:How is it running now? Seems to be good so far. Several searches with google and yahoo yield expected destinations when selecting the links. I cannot not see any other untoward activity at this point. Only thing I do notice, however, is the Notification area appears to have only one icon remaining (none hidden), where there used to be 1/2 dozen or more (included the backup server "Windows Home Server Console"). I guess they are all closed/terminated? Only the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon remains. Other than this, all appears to be well. Am I done? Thanks!
Please stick with me until we run all the scans necessary for me to give you an "all clean". Malware can hide in many places. Absence of symptoms does not mean absence of infection. You are doing great so far. We just have a bit more to do. Please post the TDSS Killer results in your next reply. Also - running RKill terminates all non-essential processes. When you reboot the computer next time, you should see your normal items in the system tray.
Ok, TDSSKiller opened!! Yay! Scanned and 227 objects were scanned and no infections were found! …and i guess that means that no suspicious files were found either? No reboot was required. I simply clicked "Close" after running the report log, pasted here. Also, if it will help later-on, I already have CCleaner, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPER AntiSpyware Free Edition installed. As well, please inform when it will be safet and appropriate to install Avast. ….and please also let me know if I should keep HijackThis or uninstall it as you mentioned it's a bit antiquated. Thanks!
Fantastic! Things are looking better and better :) Stick with me just a little longer. We have a just a bit more to do. You are doing great so far!!

I believe when you reboot, you will see the icons in your system tray again. RKill stops all non-essential processes so they can be effectively cleaned. You can go ahead and reboot now if you like and find out. Whether you keep HijackThis or not is up to you. While it is a bit out of date, as you found, when some infections hit - it may be the quickest way to get information to a forum for assistance. You might want to keep it around in the even you may need it at some time in the future and having it already installed can be a big help in a pinch).

This would also be an appropriate time to go ahead and install your anti-virus program of choice. If you are looking for some suggestions on free options here are a few:
Microsoft Security Essentials
Avira AntiVir
Avast!
AVG Anti-Virus (Free version available)

Since you have Malwarebytes already on your machine. Please run it by double clicking the icon on the desktop.
  • Click on the tab labeled Update and then click on the button Check for updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
