Hi All, Please advise how I can clean out the infections that keep returning after Rebooting the computer. Running Windows XP Home Edition Service Park 2, 256 MB of RAM and Processor Speed 1.60GHz.
Norton Internet Security 2006 and Windows Defender reported that infected with Adware.Maxsearch and Adware.ISTBar. Removed as instructed by both tools and after Reboot these returned.
I checked the "hosts" file located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc folder and it was 3 KB in size when it should only be 1 KB. Opened "hosts" in "NotePad" and found many entries listed as:
1.1.1.1 f-secure.com
1.1.1.1 www.f-secure.com
1.1.1.1 ftp.f-secure.com
1.1.1.1 ftp.sophos.com
1.1.1.1 liveupdate.symantec.com
1.1.1.1 customer.symantec.com
1.1.1.1 dispatch.mcafee.com
1.1.1.1 download.mcafee.com
1.1.1.1 rads.mcafee.com
and many more. I used "NotePad" to delete all the entries and then saved it. This action now allows me to access the Internet, but upon "reboot" this "hosts" file is re-infected.
I then downloaded and ran the MsnVirRem.exe tool which would only run in "Safe Mode". NOTE: HiJackThis, Regedit, Services.msc and many others will not run in "Normal Mode", only in "Safe Mode". These programs and/or Tools try to open in "Normal Mode", but just disappear and shutdown.
Here is my MsnVirRem.log for your review:

Rebooting…
After rebooting "hosts" is infected and the Adware.Maxsearch and Adware.ISTBar continue to show up.
I have also downloaded and ran the ATF-Cleaner.exe, selected all and clening completed. As long as I don't "Reboot" the computer, I can use it.
Please advise how I can completely clean my computer? Here is my HiJackThis log file for your review:

You are running a P2P filesharing programme.
  • Many of these programmes come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P programme, it is only the programme that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

My recommendation is you uninstall it.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
Post back with the SDfix log and a new HijackThis log

Post back with a new HijackThis log and elt me know of any remaining problems
Hi random/random; Just so that I understand the merging of the Regedit4, are we changing the registry to NOT allow or block these P2P Sharing programs? Please advise what this does? Does this mean that one can't install programs like Limewire and use them? Thanks…
Hi random/random;

Thanks for all your assistance. You are amazing and very detailed and easy to follow. The computer is running much better now. It is still a little slow, but way better than it was and there doesn't seem to be any adware problems now. I can open "Regedit", "Services.msc" and configure the "View" in Windows Explorer and it stays now. Things are working much better. I have NOT un-installed Limewire yet as the kids say they want to keep it so I told them that they had to use Norton AntiVirus to scan any files they download before they can use them. Here is the latest HiJackThis Log for your review and any further action required by me:

The registry edit removed those applications from the approved list from the windows firewall-since you appear to be using the symantec firewall this shouldn't have any effect, but I like to tidy the leftovers up.

To gain some extra performance:

Run HijackThis
Click on do a system scan only
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\jusched.exe"
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Synchronizer.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AdobeCollabSync.exe

Then close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked

Also, I wouldn't trust any single scanner to tell me that a file was clean See this topic for some suggestions on extra scanners to scan downloads with

You now appear to be clean. Congratulations!

Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection

NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis
  • Keep your antivirus updated
  • Use a firewall
While the firewall built into windows XP will protect you from incoming attacks, it will not monitor outgoing connections
It is therefore recommended that you install one of the following firewalls
    Sunbelt kerio personal firewall

  • Install spywareblaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here
Make sure to update it on a regular basis
  • Install IE-SPYAD
    Dowload and instructions located here
Make sure to update it on a regular basis
  • Use a HOSTS file
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Install and use Ad-aware & Spybot search & destroy
    Instructions are located here
Make sure to update them on a regular basis
  • Most exploits are aimed at internet explorer, so I recommend you switch to an altenative browser
    Two good alternative browsers are
    Firefox
    Opera
It is essential to update to the latest version of your browser, as the updates fix known security holes
  • Even if you do decide to switch to another browser, it is still a good idea to lock down Internet explorer
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
