Hi, I believe my daughter's laptop has been infected via an MSN IM transmitted virus last night. My Computer Associates antivirus program pops up at each bootup and tells me it has detected and cleaned a Win32/Hostblock infection. After going to the Comuter Associates site and investigating, I think it might be the SmitFraud infection. I ran a PandaSoftware online scan today and it says the laptop has a Ldpinch.IM virus. I downloaded the hijack this program, installed it and tried to run it and it closes almost immediately before I can run anything. And just now the Computer Associates program just popped up on the laptop and says it detected two instances of a Win32/Peastore.A infection, and it deleted one instance and says status is "infected" for the other instance. How can I run a hijack this log so I can post it here and get help or what should I do to stop further damage? Thanks in advance! RRK
Was able to go into safe mode and run hijackthis. Whatever has infected the laptop won't allow me to keep anything related to the hijackthis program open in WindowsXP for more than a couple seconds, even the log file that I ran in safe mode. I renamed the log file so the file name didn't begin with hijackthis and that seemed to fool the infection and allowed me to open the log file and copy it here. Only in safe mode was I able to run hijack this. Also, IE was just again redirected from the home page we want to something else. Here's the log file that I ran in safe mode. Thanks again for any help.

Hello and welcome to the forums

Lets see if after running this you can do a HijackThis in normal mode.

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
Hi LDTate,

Thanks for helping me with my problem. The combofix and hijackthis logs are copied below. Some background info. When the infection hit, the laptop had an up to date ZoneAlarm and Computer Associates EZ Antivirus running plus some recently updated SpywareBlaster, SpyBot and Ad-aware running. Since the infection, the ZoneAlarm ceased working and I couldn't get it to reinstall. A scan using SpyBot said I had the SmitFraud infection and SpyBot supposedly cleaned it but I downloaded and ran the SmitFraudFix program in safe mode. I got antsy and probably should've waited for help from the forum. Sorry. Doing that didn't fix the infection. As part of trying to troubleshoot the infection, I tried to open msconfig and go to the startup tab to see what was starting up, but msconfig would shut down almost immediately after opening, just as hijackthis did. My EZ Antivirus tells me after each bootup that it finds a Win32/Hostblock infection and that it cleans it but it finds it after each bootup. Also tonight while getting on the internet, EZ Antivirus reported finding Win32/Peastore.A infection twice in the EZ Antivirus popup window, but only one occurrence is reported to be cleaned. Earlier in the week I ran a PandaSoft online scan and it found a Trj/Ldpinch.IM. I've stayed off the internet for much of the week since being stymied with my attempts to self troubleshoot. Anyway, thanks again for your help, my daughter and I really appreciate it!

Hi LDTate,

I have extensively searched for the folder c:\windows\system32\oorlpho and cannot find it. I enabled hidden files to be viewed, in both windows explorer and while using search and searched starting with my computer so to hopefully find the folder or file somewhere on the computer, after visually going through the system 32 folder and not seeing the folder or a file. Before running your suggested combofix last night, I wasn't able to enable viewing hidden files and folders–I think the bug was preventing me from doing it, but now when in windows explorer and going to tools, folder options, view, it says show hidden files and folders is enabled. Could the bug be making that folder or file invisible?

In answer to your question, yes, after running combofix I was able to run the hijackthis log in normal mode and that is what I posted last night. I'll run it again and post it here in case you'd like to see it again. There's also another strange-looking to me folder under c:\ that has a text file within the folder. At the risk of sending you down a wrong path, the name of this folder named c:\fc84ef7b9812d91b2ecb1e9a09\msxml4-KB927978-enu.log and I could post it here if you think it might help. I tried to include it here but it along with the hijackthis log took up too many characters. Its a large text file. Not sure it wouldn't exceed the number of allowed characters even by itself. It looked suspicious to me. I'll include a small portion of the file so you can maybe get the jist of it. The new hijackthis log run a short bit ago in normal mode follows the snippit of this suspicious log file.

That file is created by the Microsoft Security update on November 21, 2006 and it not harmful.

Not seeing anything bad in your log.
How's it running now?
Hi LDTate,

Sorry for the delay in responding. Been at a school fundraiser. Ran some scans to paste in my reply in case you wanted to look at them. Thanks for the answer on the Microsoft Security update. I won't worry about it.

At bootup just now I didn't get the California Associates EZ Antivirus popup telling me I was infected with the Win32/Hostblock. I was able to install ZoneAlarm (free version) now, which I wasn't able to after getting the infection. I ran a CA EZ Antivirus scan of the system and it didn't find anything.

I ran an www.pandasoftware.com online scan and it came up with the following:
Spyware: Processor found under c:\documents and settings\kelsey\Desktop\Smitfraudfix\Process.exe
Hacking tools and rootkits: ActiveSearch found under c:\recycler\S-1-18\DC1\system.dll

I saved the pandasoftware scan log and will post it below.

I then updated and ran SpyBot and it found:
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusDisableNotify
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.FirewallDisableNotify
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.UpdateDisableNotify
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled

In the past I've never chosen to have SpyBot fix those, although I don't remember the Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled line being found by SpyBot before. So like in the past, I didn't let SpyBot fix those four lines.

I then updated Spywareblaster.

I then updated and ran Ad-Aware (free version). It found a critical item (type RegData) and I let Ad-Aware fix it. I saved the log of the scan and will post it below.

I also ran another hijackthis log and will post it below.

Thanks again for all your help!

If you highlight the detection with your mouse,Spybot will give you this description after you click the bar over to the right:
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntivirusDisableNotify:

Company: Microsoft
Product: Windows Security Center
Threat: Changed Security Center Settings

Functionality
This entry only wants to bring to your attention that "someone" has disabled one or more notifications in the Windows security center.
If you’ve changed the settings yourself you can safely tell Spybot to exclude those detections from further searches. In order to do this please right click on each in turn, then click "exclude this detection from future searches". That way, should any other part of security center settings change Spybot will still detect those. For more information please visit our forum linked above.

"Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify" , if this is found, the Security Center does not notify about the antivirussoftware.
This could have been disabled by your antivirussoftware to avoid double notifications. If your antivirussoftware is up and running , you can ignore this detection.

Needless to say, it's safe to disable the detection of those items in Spybot.. (AFter clicking on the + sign at the listing, RIGHT click on the detection entry, choose "Ignore this detection in future scans" or something similar to that.)

Please download HostsXpert from the link below.

http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert.zip
Open HostsXpert.exe.

you have to click: ''make hosts writable'' in the top right corner, then press the ''restore'' option

Close program when complete.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks, LDTate. I'll disable the detection of those items in SpyBot. I ran HostsXpert and it immediately gave me a popup that asked me a yes or no question about the hosts file. I chose yes. The program came up with the choice of make hosts read only as default. I clicked on it and changed it to a red colored make hosts writeable but the program wouldn't allow me to press the restore button. Only when the choice was make hosts read only would the button for restore work. I then went to the recycle bin but there wasn't anything in it. So I'm not sure if I accomplished what you wanted me to.

I rebooted. The system seems to behave fine at the moment. I'm not getting any pop up warnings from EZ Antivirus. Not noticing any problems. Here's a new hijackthis log file.

Thanks,

RRK

You did right with the host file

You can remove any programs I had you install

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Hi LDTate, I'll remove the programs you had me install. I turned on system restore. The bug had turned it off. I also did the folder option things you suggested. I do have Spywareblaster, Ad-aware, and SpyBot on my daughter's system already. I run only CA's EZ Antivirus and the free ZoneAlarm. I usually update the anti spyware programs twice a month, so I'll try to do it more often. I told my daughter never to click run on something she's not 100% sure of. I think she's learned her lesson. I read Tony Klein's piece. I think my daughter's system is okay now. I think I'll run ccleaner on it and that should clean the registry and any junk out of the system. Thanks so much for your help, LDTate. I greatly appreciate it. I dreaded the thought of reformatting her laptop. Take care. RRK
