Update: Now my PC starts up pretty normally, but it's still very slow, in the sense that it takes a long time for programs to open. It also freezes up alot, usually for a few minutes each time. Symantec has not detected any risks recently, the last being on the 2nd of Feb 2007. If needed I can provide the risk history. Spybot S&D is detecting less threats now. Firefox is still crashing alot. But issues 5 and 6 are no longer occuring. :)
Hi Nilerider,

Things are looking better. A couple of items you can clean up with HJT.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

This is a restriction. Leave it unchecked if it was set by you using a software like Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster or another similar protection software, or if these were set by your system administrator. Otherwise check/fix it with HighjackThis.

O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbars\Restrictions present

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Now that your IE appears to be working again I would like you to run the F-secure scan I had recommended earlier in the fix.

Please go Here and do an online scan. Let it fix any infections.
Let me know what is found.

After scan, reboot and post a new HijackThis log

Also let me know how the computer is running now.
Startup is slower again, and the resolution changing issue (issue 6) is occurring again. Symantec recently detected one trojan and adware: Trojan.Vundo and Adeware.VirtuMonde. Both resulted in two actions being taken, 'Reboot required - cleaned by deletion' and 'Reboot processing'. The CPU usage fluctuates alot and the computer freezes for a short while often, esp when iTunes and Firefox are running at the same time. Programs also take quite a while to open. Also, when I try to update my AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 trial, an 'Error. Failed to connect to server update.exido.net' is shown.
I've tried running the F-Secure Scan, but somehow it can't work. An error message saying " An error has occurred! Please close the scanner and your browser, then try again. (Id:24)" always pops up. I've tried numerous times, but it doesn't work.

Hi Nilerider,

Although I don't see evidence of Vundo in your log Norton may have only partially fixed it. Let's run the Vundo tool to make sure.

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

and the resolution changing issue (issue 6) is occurring again.

While it's possible this is related to Malware I would doubt it. I recommend finding the latest drivers for you video card and updating them. Even if you have the latest I would try re-installing them.
I apologize for my non answer. My comp was sent for reformatting, so yeah. I really appreciate all your help :) It did help alot. Sorry for making you wait. Thanks for your patience. :)
Hello,

OK thanks for the update. That was probably a good idea considering how infected this machine appeared to be.

Good luck,
Dave

To prevent future infection I recommend you take a look through this:

Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Here is a list of some free and evaluation versions to try: AVG AntiVirus
Avast Antivirus Home Version–Free
Online Scanners:
Trend Micro Housecall
Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some free and evalutation versions that provide
better security than the Windows Firewall.Kerio Personal Firewall
Zone Alarm Free
Outpost Firewall
For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some other available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Spybot: Search And Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

Install Ad-Aware - Ad-Aware SE You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
