I posted a topic in another forum about my computer lagging and locking up. The kind man who was helping me suggested that I submit my HJT log to this forum, as he must have noticed something "not so good" in my log. I'm more than a little worried. Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome to Tom Coyote

I would like to point out that you indeed have a virus on this computer, this is what we are up against. You are running Windows 98 SE and Microsoft discontinued support as far as windows updates to keep your system secure along with any customer service. Also, a lot of the tools we use to clean infections won't run on Win 98, so we are going to have to attempt this manually. With Windows Vista around the corner, you should be able to pick up an upgrade to Windows XP fairly cheap.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Tutorial for CCleaner

Post a new HJT log and lets see if its gone.
Dear Ken,

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I followed your instructions, removed/deleted items in HJT, looked for the file C:\WINDOWS\Ebqgzcvl.dll (which was gone), ran CCleaner, and I'm happy to say things are looking much brighter. New log file below.

Last of my questions - should I be concerned with any of the following?

1. This file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLL
2. The 7 people/names that were added to my Buddy list (that I did not put there)
PleaseUpgrade000, PleaseUpgrade001, PleaseUpgrade002 through PleaseUpgrade006
3. I still have a slight problem with my cursor/arrow locking up. It doesn't take as much effort to get
it going again, but the problem is still there. Any idea?

Again, Thank you so much for all your help :) . I await your reply.

Beth
Hi Beth,

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLL
<– this is needed for windows to run.

Remove this with HJT.
O3 - Toolbar: Freeprod Toolbar - {77FBF9B8-1D37-4FF2-9CED-192D8E3ABA6F} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\FREEPROD TOOLBAR\FREEPROD.DLL (file missing)

Then delete this whole folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\FREEPROD TOOLBAR

You system appears a little old, you may try changing the mouse to a new one. They do tend to ware out after a bit of time. You also may have to reinstall the driver for it. If I read it correctly, you have 64 MBs or memory, thats not a whole lot and your system may be real sluggish on account of it.

Right click on My Computer and then click on Properties and down towards the bottom you can see how much memory you have. A memory upgrade is the best and cheapest upgrade you can do for a system to speed it up.

You can go here and run this free tool, towards the top on the right it will show you how many memory slots you have and what is in each one, if you have one open you can place another module in it.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Then you can go here and plug in your make and model of your computer and it will tell you the max you can install and the prices, they even have a tool that will scan your system and let you know what you need.
Crucial

You can go into your buddy list and remove those entries you don't want, I believe they have to do with AOL IM.

The rest of your log looks fine, How are things running now.
Hi Ken - Well, I did as you said with the deletion of the freeprod toolbar. I failed to mention that I bought a new wireless mouse a while back. It had been working fine, then it started locking up. I installed the software for the mouse, again, and the mouse seems to run a bit more smoothly, but still locks up. Do you have instructions on how to reinstall the driver? Other than that, my computer seems to be running quite nicely now. I will do as you recommend and look for the upgrade for my computer. I await your reply, Beth
Hi Beth :D

Just a thought but have you changed the batteries in the mouse lately??

If you have the disk for the mouse, you can go to the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall it, then use your disk to reinstall the drivers for the mouse.

Most of these pertain to XP and above, but you can learn something about keeping the bad guys out.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.

Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
Hi Ken - I changed the batteries in the mouse and it's still locking up (but thats the absolute least of my worries). I'm so happy that the major problems have been cleared up. I will install the programs you recommended (I already have quite a few of them) and will read the links on how not to get reinfected. Would you like me to post somewhere special that this topic has been resolved? A million thanks for taking the time to help me. :-) Sincerely grateful, Beth
