Hijackthis log confusion

Hello,

My computer started crashing a few days ago, so I ran AdAware, Spybot and Norton antivirus, which I run about once a month. I got rid of most problems but had one that Norton found called counter.exe which it wouldn't let me delete. I looked up info about the trojan (for that is what it said it was) and forums told me to download hijackthis and then post the results, so that is what I am doing.

Hi and welcome to the Forums :)

We'll d some cleaning.

Although NewDotNet does not claim to be spyware, it has been associated with computer instability in certain situations. Both SaveNow and NewDotNet have been linked for computer instability according to the MS Knowledge Base Article 302463.

Foistware: New Net, Inc. (NewDotNet) DLL

I recommend that you remove NewDotNet unless you deliberately installed it.
=======================================================================

To uninstall the New.Net or NewDotNet:
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight New.Net or NewDotNet, click Remove.
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
If it is not listed, follow these instructions:
  • From a computer that has Internet access, click on NewDotNet Removal
  • If you get "the page cannot be displayed" when clicking on the removal link, you may have winhelp's mvps hosts file installed, as www.newdotnet.com is a blocked site
  • Download and save uninstall6_90.exe (New.Net/Support/Uninstall exe file) to the Desktop.
  • Go to the Desktop and double-click on uninstall6_90.exe
  • Click on the OK button.
  • After removal, reboot.
Please download LSP-Fix from the following link and save it to a location you can find later if necessary. Do not use this. See ***note below.

***Note: If you cannot connect to the Internet after removing New.net, please run the LSP-Fix program I had you download earlier, and click on the finish button. Reboot and you should be able to get back on.

I'll assume that you removed newdotnet so please post a fresh HijackThis log :)

Thank you for your reply, I removed the newdotnet thingy from my computer and ran a new Hijackthis log thing.

I forgot to warn you in my previous message:
One or more of the identified infections steal information. If this system is used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately by using a different computer (not the infected one!) to make the changes. Banking and credit card institutions, if any, should be notified of the possible security breech. I suggest that you read this article too.

You should print these instructions or save these to a text file. Follow these instructions carefully.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)

    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I think I followed along pretty good and am posting my newest hijackthis.log and my log from the avg anti-spyware program. Weird to me was that I deleted the newdotnet thing earlier and it still showed up on the avg thing. So i guess i did not completely delete it. Ok again thanks for all your help! I can't see a firewall in your log (McAfee doesn't include one, right?)

You don't seem to have a firewall installed. You must install one firewall.

These are good (free) firewalls: Now you can clean AVG's Quarantine:
  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Click Infections
  • Click Quarantine tab
  • Click Select all
  • Click Remove finally
  • Close the program
You can remove the tools we used.

Then you should update your Java to the latest version (6.0)
  • Start
  • Control Panel
  • Add/Remove Programs
  • Delete the old Java, J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Install it
Now you can make your hidden files hidden again.
  • Go to My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Click the View tab.
  • Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
  • Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files"
  • Click Apply and then the OK and close My Computer.
