Hello, I'm new in this forum. I hope you can help me. My laptop has gone crazy and i don't why. The star menu has disappear, but i can access to the taskmanager, when i'm there i can see that the % usage of the CPU is 100, and that the svchost for a network service is taking it all. Please tell me what to do please. I can not save any new files on the laptop, and can't access the web (Currently i'm using the PC from my office). Thank you in Advance. Regards Jose
Hello Jose,

Is explorer.exe listed as one of the processes in Task Manager? If not, click File|New Task, type explorer.exe, and press Enter.

Also, try disabling the DNS Client service by using the same instructions as previous, except type services.msc. When you find the service name, click it, then choose Disable on the left pane. Then, double-click the service, choose Properties, and "Disabled" as the Startup Type.

Cheers,

Ax
Hi AX, The explorer.exe is listed as one of the processes. I have already disable the DNS Client service, but i did it using the sc command at the CMD prompt, because when i tried to enter to the properties of the services using control panel, it didn't work. What else can i do?. I don't want to format my computer, because i'm gone a loose a lot of information. Plese Help Regards Jose
OK, thanks for the update. When did the problem start occuring? Have you added any new software/hardware? What do you have for antivirus, antispyware, and firewall? Any information will help. Also, what happens if you try to end the explorer.exe task and start a new one?
The computer was fine, until my brother use it. ccording to him, he only check his personal mail, he didn't download anythig. I'm using McAfee for all of it. I will try to end the explorer an run a new one. For runnig it i only have to type explorer.exe right?. PS: When i try to end the svchos that is consuming all the cpu, it shows me a message saying that the computer will restart in one minute, and in a minute the computer turns off. Regards Jose
My system was updated very frenquently including SP2. About the Firewall, it was enabled but now it is not, and i'm not able to enable it. Regards Jose
Are you able to get into safe mode by tapping F8 when your system is booting up? You should get a boot list and be able to choose safe mode from there.
Hi Ax, I did what you want about the explorer.exe. I shut it down, and all my desktop icons dissapear. Then whan i ran again the process, the icons appears again, but the Satar Menu Bar didn't. Yes, i'm able to log in safe mode, but i have the same problem, ther is no Start menu bar. Regards Jose
No i can't. I have also try using the windows key on the keyboard. Do you think this is a Virus?. Also, what happend to the "My Documents" directory if i insert the Windows Install CD and try to fix it, will it be erased?
It quite possibly could be virus/malware related. Your "My Documents" directory will be fine as long as you do not format your computer, but a reinstall of Windows alone won't take care of a virus/malware problem.

We first need to make sure your system is virus/malware free. The svchost.exe process in question is undoubtedly running the "Remote Procedure Call (RPC)" service. Download HijackThis, read this, and post an HJT log in a new thread here. You may have to download HJT to a disk and then save it to the laptop from the Task manager. When your log file is clean, you can continue with this thread. Please let me know if you need any help.

Hi Ax, I finally give up with my laptop. A friend help me extracting all my data in his laptop (he has an adapter for a secondary drive). After that i just format and install again all the OS. Bad Luck this time. But Anyway thank you for your help. Regards Jose
