I installed a virus program on my other computer no problems at all. I then attempted to install on this computer and continue receiving a window say problem w/this file, blocked because not a valid digital signature. I ran "House Call" last night and it had found 4 different issues. Rebooted and still can not install any virus programs I have attempted.

Hi Dawgnu and welcome to the forums here at Tom Coyote.

I'll try and help but I need a little more information.

I installed a virus program on my other computer no problems at all.

What Anti-Virus program are you trying to install?

I then attempted to install on this computer and continue receiving a window say problem w/this file, blocked because not a valid digital signature

What file? What is the exact error msg. you get?

I ran "House Call" last night and it had found 4 different issues.

Can you post the Trend Micro log?

Regards,
Dave

I was trying to install the free version of AVG Anti Virus by Grisoft.com I had downloaded their spyware program Jan 1 2007 with no problems.
I no longer have what House Call had found, after I clicked on fix it was gone. It was a one time scan/fix with no way of going back to see.
What ever virus that has taken over blocks me from installing Avast Virus program also. I am trying to rerun House Call right now and I have just finished downloading another program called Spyware Doctor.
I will post both findings after the scans are completed.
OK, sounds good. Here are some instructions for a couple of online scans, one being for the Trend Micro. I've also had some good success with the Kaspersky. Try that too and see what is found.

TrendMicro™ HouseCall Java Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • If confirmed that HouseCall can run on your system, under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.
=====================================================================

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click 'Yes'.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Post any reports you can and we'll see what we find.

Regards,
Dave
Hi, I have tried several times to rerun House Call. It starts the motions of scanning but goes round and round, it never completes the actual scan. I have tried several times to run the Kaspersky scan and I get as far as I clicked on installing the Active x and then a page pops up explaining the benefits and requirements, etc and then nothing happens at all. I click on Scan and nothing happens at all.
Ok, I have tried to do as you instructed. I downloaded and saved the first segment to a folder. I downloaded the zip file to same folder but when I attempted to unzip, it says Windows does not recognize that type of file. I was talking to a fried today, they suggested I download and run Spyware Doctor. They would let me use their license key for one time only. I did so and I think it cleared up the virus's that were preventing me from installing any virus programs, when I was finished, I rebooted and attempted to download the AVG free virus program and it allowed me finally to install it. Now I no longer am able to use my friends license key for Spyware Doctor but I ran another scan afterwards just to see if it would find something. what it did find was 2 problems as follows: Cookies (atwola.com) Location: Documents & Settings\CC\Cookies|cc@atwola[1].txt Apropos Media Location: C:\System Volume Information\_restore{83BD94BA-2EF8-4C5E-B527}
OK Dawgnu sounds like you have made some progress. But I'm unclear on several things.

I downloaded and saved the first segment to a folder.

What are you referring to here? SysClean?

I also asked you to run your AVG AS and give me a log. Were you able to do that?

Can you now download and run either of the online virus scans?

Spyware Doctor: The cookie it found is no big deal. The item it found from Apropos Media is in your restore point which can be easily cleaned up (see below). The fact that it is from Apropos concerns me as they are known for a particular root kit.

It would be great now if you could run one of the online scans, along with AVG AS, and post back real logs with information from them. If not we will go from there. I will consult an expert on root kits regarding the Apropos find.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

Dave
Ok, I followed your instructions on the resetting system restore.
I ran AVG Spyware, it found nothing at all.
I was successful finally at downloading the AVG Virus Program.

I ran Spyware Doctor and found as follows:
Document & Settings\cc\cookies\[removed][1].txt
Document & Settings\cc\cookies\cc@atwola[1].txt
Document & Settings\cc\cookies\cc@did-it[1].txt

I ran the Sysclean and report is as follows:

Hey Dawgnu,

Well everything appears clean to me and I'm glad things are running better. Looks like you got it.

In addition to what you currently have in place you may want to consider looking through the following:

Use ATF Cleaner to remove temp files, cookies, cache, ect…

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Dave
I have installed and ran the ATF cleaner. I have also installed both the Spywareblaster and Guard as you have suggested. Thank you for all your help. This site really rocks.
