Thanks alot for all the help
Good Morning sibyl :D

It maynot be morning where you are :D

Your log looks fine  Just a couple of loose ends to fix.

If you look at your AVG log you will see some bad stuff that was cleaned in your System Restore Program, lets clean it all out and its very important that you set a New Restore Point.

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Create a new Restore Point <– Very Important
  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember, You will have to be in Catagory View to see this

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

This is taking me nowhere
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://fwalerts.zonelabs.com/fwalerts/fwan…oduct=ZoneAlarm

These are both disabled, if you or an administrator set them then leave them alone otherwise fix them
O4 - Global Startup: BlueSoleil.lnk.disabled
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk.disabled

NotifyPhoneBook.exe <– This may be part of your modem drivers, I really am not sure, Google is not turning up to much for this.

We can upload the file to be anaylized, it will give you a report, post the report in your next reply

Go here Jotti Upload
  • Use the Browse Feature.
  • Browse to C:\WINDOWS\System32\NotifyPhoneBook.exe
  • Then use the Submit Button
  • It will give you a report, copy and paste the report in your next reply.
Ken
Morning Ken :) the notifyphonebook.exe scan log shows the file free of any malwares. :weee: By the way, should i turn on the Teatimer again? I have created a new system restore point. Thanks alot. p/s: its 9pm over here. sibyl
sibyl :D

Lunch time here…

Glad you did the System Restore feature because if you ever used it to restore your system back to an earlier date , you would have risked infecting yourself again.

I would leave notifyphonebook alone then.

As far as the TeaTimer, I am going to give you some tips and free tools to install that will help keep you more secure, if you install Spyware Guard then do not re enable the Tea Timer.

With Spybot Search and Destroy, make sure that you periodically check for updates and then click on Immunize and then click on the Green Cross at the top to Immunize your computer.

How are things running now??
Hi Ken,

I'm getting Prompt from "Messenger Service" about corrupted windows registry etc.
Below is an example. of the message.

Critical System Error!
Your windows registry appears to be infected and/or corrupted. Pls go to the Microsoft registry tool at www.winregistryclearner.com to scan and repair the system registry.
URL: www.winregistrycleaner.com
Severity: Extreme
Symptoms: Messages such as these, as well as buffer overflow exploit allowing malicious users to gain access to your computer.
Cure: Download the scanner and allow it to clean and repair your Microsoft windows registry

The "Messenger Service" prompts me with different sites and advise me to fix my computer.
It seems rather suspicious to me. How do i remove/disable the "Messenger Service"?

Also, i encountered a blue screen for a few times. It mentions something like BAD_POOL_CALLER.
Didn't manage to copy down the whole content. But, you have any idea what it was about?

regards,
sibyl
sibyl :D

Do this….
  • Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
  • Scroll down to Messenger Service
  • Double Click that service to open it.
  • Click on Stop Service.
  • Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • OK your way out of the program.
The reason you are getting those warnings ( and they are all spam by the way ) is because you are behind on Windows Updates. You need to download and install Service Pack 2 ( SP2 ) it would have by default disabled that program.

Open up Internet Explorer and go to Tools> Windows Updates and go for it. Download and install any and all Critical Updates…DO NOT INSTALL ANY DRIVER UPDATES.

BAD_POOL_CALLER <– This is possibly faulty memory.

How old is your system??
Have you moved your computer lately and possibly jiggled the memory modules loose ??
You can open up the case, unplug it from the power outlet, touch the power supply with your hands to get rid of static electricity and press down on the memory modules and make sure there snapped in tight.

You can read about it here
http://kindel.com/blogs/charlie/archive/2004/05/26/282.aspx

Then post a new HJT log and lets make sure nothing has come back.
Ken :)

I have downloaded the memory tester and run it. It made 11+ passes with 0 error.
So i guess my ram is working fine?
However, the BAD_POOL_CALLER still appears. Any advise? :P

Below is my HJT logfile.

Your HJT log looks fine

BAD_POOL_CALLER As far as this goes, it could be a multitude of things causing it from bad memory ( which you checked …good job by the way :D ) to a faulty device driver for any number of hardware items that is installed on your system. Sometimes these things are very hard to pin down.

Since this forum is for Malware and Virus removal only, I am going to give you links to windows support sites including our own here at Tom Coyote that are better equipped to help you in that area.

You also need to update your Operating System to Service Pack 2. Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools> Windows Updates and install ALL CRITICAL UPDATES.….DO NOT INSTALL ANY DRIVER FILES.
Its possible that this could correct the problem

Then follow the link for PCPITSTOP and take your computer in for a checkup, it may also pin point that problem. There are instructions at that site to link me to the test, post it and maybe it will give us a clue as to the BAD_POOL_CALLER problem

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
I will leave this thread open for you so you can post the PitStop report
