unexplained cpu usage

Recently I noticed that the task manager performance tab shows 70-90% cpu use all the time, even right after start up with no user-launched programs running.

When I watch the processes tab for a while, the only 2 processes I see using cpu are System Idle and taskmgr.exe, and most of the time System Idle is showing 99.

If I boot in safe mode with networking, the cpu usage problem remains.

If I boot in safe mode with no networking - cpu use is fine (i.e. bounces between 0 - 5% or something like that).

Anyone have any ideas? A scan with AVG 7.5 didn't find anything noteworthy.

Thanks for your help!

Please disregard this help request. In doing more searching I finally came across an app called Process Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx) that showed me that most of the cpu cycles were being consumed by hardware interrupts and DPCs. Since I knew that booting into safe mode without networking got rid of the problem, I assumed that it was a networking issue. I tried disabling my active network connection and the cpu cycles went down to normal.

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Glad you got it figured out and all is well. Any issues that you feel are malware or virus related, please to hesitate to post back. I will leave this thread open for you for about a week.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
