"Start Page" is not listed as one of the registry values in Local Machine or Current User (Local page is listed)….not sure if I deleted them by mistake previously when clearing out bad URL's. Not sure how to add to the registry. Any thoughts? Reinstalled IE7 but that did not help. I could restore to set-point before this process began and change the registry and then take off the HiJack files again. A few things that look suspicious in the registry for main: Extensions Off Page: about:NoAdd-ons Security Risk Page: about:SecurityRisk Thanks……
Well with that gone try starting IE go to yahoo and go to tools and see if you under the general tab see if you can set yahoo to the current page.
No I can not change it…..keeps defaulting back to about:blank when exiting out of the general tab and coming back in again to verify. How can I fix the registry or is there something else to do instead? Thanks…..
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then download RegSeeker http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm.
Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again.
Then right click within the search results and select delete.
Run it again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing.
Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back.
A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.
Little Eagle, I did everything you mentioned in the previous post. I ran RegSeeker 6 times and there are still 6 items that keep popping up the last 3 times I ran the RegSeeker - they won't go away. Decided to reboot and see what happens. Upon reboot there is a message popping up for Norton stating that can not repair Norton, must uninstall / repair then reinstall Norton. As this is a 60 day trial version of Norton, I tried to Remove using the Removal tool (plan on taking off of the PC anyways) and the status in the removal bar shows error at approx. 10% removal, then locks up after 5 minutes. Now I have an error message that Norton files are not correct upon reboot. Tried to reinstall and uninstall, both did not work. Then tried to undo the registry changes using the back-up feature in RegSeeker. After double-clicking on the icon for each of the archive files, there is an error message that back-up data does not exist. With all of that said, at this point in time I am thinking that a restore might be in order back to what the settings were prior to the work that begun on this issue last week. That way I can start clean. A few questions about restore: - Will the registry be restored also? - Any watch-out for the restore process? Do you agree that we need to do a system restore. Thanks for all of your help and patience.
Little Eagle,

Everything looks good now…..Everything is cleaned up and no HiJacks.

First I removed Norton and installed AVG, Avast and Zone Alarm. Next I Restored the sytem back to the earlier point. Then I disabled the TeaTimer and SpySweeper again. Then went into the Registry and changed (not deleted) the incorrect Start Page settings. Did HiJackThis and deleted out 4 invalid entries. Ran HijackThis again, and everything looks greatm no issues!

Everything looks great now, and no HiJack attempts being made.

Last thing: I still have TeaTimer and SpySweeper turned off. Should I uninstall SpySweeper to start clean, and do I need to turn TeaTimer back on again?

Thanks for all of your help on this issue. You have been a huge help!!

I would like to see a copy of the file in bold.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the first file you want to zip.
Right click on the file and select Send To and Compressed (zipped) Folder.
This makes a copy it does not delete it.
Please zip the file and upload it here
Or email it here
Little Eagle,

Thanks for all of your help - that is a great article. I am having trouble when turning TeaTimer back on. Also had difficulties with turning SpySweeper back on also. Thought that Spysweeper was conflicting with TeaTimer so I uninstalled it. Still having problems when turning Tea Timer back on, I get 2 items changing the Browser settings (bolded below). If I turn off TeaTimer, I can delete these through HJT. Once I turn TeaTimer back on, these 2 items appear again. I have checked the Registry and everything looks OK for the 'Main' section in IE.

Any ideas?

Thanks
