Hello,

i posted a week ago but had no reply and the problem is still there. After several attempts running AVG / Spybot SD / Ad-Aware I'm still getting AVG pop-up alerts saying it's detected; SZR_DR.SYS. It heals it but the same alert returns on restart. I've also found szr_dll.dll and szr_32.exe sitting in the C:\WinNT folder, both of which can't be deleted or removed, szr_32.exe is also running in the processes but again, access is denied, including in safe mode. Can anyone assist in cleaning this out?

Hi 557…1,

Sorry for the delay. I closed your other topic so no one else will pick it up. You appear to have a Vundo infection. So…

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Regards,
Dave
Thanks for the reply Dave, unfortunately my colleague has taken the unit home for the weekend. Will run the fix and repost logs on Monday. thanks again theo
Ok. I ran Vundo and it came up with three files. Went through the remove sequence but an error message came up as follows:

"Cannot import C:\WINNT\VundoFix.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error"

After the reboot I ran it again and it came up with the one file: wvuus.dll from the first scan still there. I ran the remove sequence again and it crashed severely on reboot. As far as I can tell, that DLL is missing, does it just need to be removed via HJT from the registry?

Here's the logs, thanks for the help on this one.

Best regards

theo

My apologies for gatecrashing this thread, but there's a file we'd like to have a closer look at::

C:\WINNT\system32\msdtc32.dll

We have it listed as legitimate, but I now think we could conceivably have been mistaken, so we'd like to receive a sample for analysis so as to make sure it indeed belongs on your computer!

Could I ask you to please go to this forum

There's no need to register. Just start a new topic, titled "File for TonyKlein".

In the topic, simply refer to this TC forum thread, and use the Attachment box to upload the file.

In fact there's not even a need to actually browse to the file: just copy the full path to the file, in this case:

C:\WINNT\system32\msdtc32.dll

… and paste it in in the attachment box, then press the 'Post' button. The file should be found and uploaded.

NOTE: You will not see the files that have been uploaded (including the ones you upload yourself) as they only show to the authorised users who can download them

After that I'll be happy to leave you in Dave's most capable hands! :)

Thanks! :)
Thank you very much for submitting the file; that was fast indeed! :) . The file SAYS it is by Microsoft, and it scans clean. However, what made me suspicious is that the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator Service is indeed that: a service, and I'm not sure why it would require a browser plugin…

Also, the Microsoft Dll Help Database doesn't know it…

Anyhow, it *may* well be legitimate nonetheless. I would however advise you to go to the Tools menu (in IE) > Manage add-ons, and disable this browser plugin. You can always re-enable it if necessary.

Thanks again for submitting the file. If anything new comes up I'll be sure to let you know.
Hi theo,

Thank you for getting that file to Tony so fast. We appreciate it.

For your Vundofix problem let's try the following:

Move Vundofix.exe to a folder that has no spaces in the name. i.e.
Create a new folder on your C: drive called Vundo.
So now you have C:\Vundo
Move Vundofix.exe to the new folder.

Now, download and run Doug Knox regfile association fix.
Run the xp_regfile.reg file and follow the prompts.

Now try running Vundofix again.

Dave
OK, I've submitted the file to a few folks, and it would appear it is indeed malicious.

BOClean's Kevin McAleavey came back to me with the following:

it is *NOT* legit, checked with Microsoft. Can't see what it's really doing though will let you know later. But for whoever's stuck with that file, you can safely tell them that it is NOT legit …

You DO want to DISable that BHO at the very least; I'll keep you informed of anything else that transpires.
Thanks for the tips guys. I ran the regfile, created the folder and ran Vundo from there and it picked up the wvuus.dll again, but it still came up with the same error message. No crash on reboot but it didn't remove the file either. To Tony; my colleague is running IE 6.0.2800.1106, and doesn't have a manage add-ons option in the tools menu I'm afraid. Is there somewhere else I can disable it, or would it be advisable to remove the msdtc32.dll? Regards theo
Sure thing, here it is:

Hi 5570001,

At this point I have some bad news here.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files without your knowledge.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Regards,
Dave
Hello Dave Kinda figured that's what I'd have to end up doing, I've had it offline since this started. My colleague doesn't do any banking or personal work on there thankfully, but it does have some important data regarding our company mailing list, so it'll be a full reformat. Thanks again for all the help and swift replies, for any future problems I'll be posting here again! best regards theo
