I don't see any malicious programs listed. I believe that the files with the long text on your C: drive are related to Windows Update downloads.

Where you able to remove newnet.exe

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop, unzip it to a folder that you can find

Highlight the file with the complete path inside the Quote Box and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

C:\WINDOWS\ss3unstl.exe

  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure Single File is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

Your new HJT log looks fine  The only thing to do is to update your Java as it leaves a hole for the bad guys to get in.
  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Java website and download and install the update.
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Are you still having start up problems??
Hi Ken, First, thanks so much for all your help with the security problems!! I really appreciate all the time you put into this. Unfortunately I am still having XP problems. Still, the Spyware Doctor dialog box, office trying to install, all my desktop icons are highlighted (and I have checked the settings), I have to double click explorer three times until it runs and when I close internet explorer and shut down several more explorer end task windows appear but the task manager shows all tasks are off, and last but not least, Windows keeps wanting to install updates on every reboot - and they are already up to date. So many things are in need of repair - I am now wondering if I will need to start with a fresh reinstall… Again, thanks for all your help. Kathy
Hi Kathy, :D

Sometimes malware will leave some damage on your system even after it was cleaned off. The people that write this garbage are not very nice. :( Doing a reformat and clean install is always an option that we like to do as a last resort.

If you have your windows CD we can try running the System File Checker that will replace any missing or corrupted system files. Depending on how your manufacturer set up your system, you may or maynot need the disk.
  • Click Start>Run
  • Type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
  • Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
  • This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things.
You may need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

If you do have your windows or a system recovery disk, you may be able to do a system repair that will basically install windows right on top of the current version and that may replace any files that are missing.

You also have Winpatrol installed, open the program and go to Startup and disable anything that has to do with Spyware Doctor and Microsoft Office so it won't load on startup and see if this helps at all.

My self, before a clean install you may want to try for some windows help here. We have a windows support forum right here at Tom Coyote that has an excellent team. If you post there be sure to tell them that you posted in this forum and that your HJT log is clean.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D I wish I could do more but windows support is better at helping you with these issues.
Hi Ken, I ran the system scan. Nothing changed. Win Patrol application does not work - nor does the uninstall… I am definitely first going to try a repair install. I basically have to reinstall all my programs anyway to get them to work!! Once I do have my system up and running I will forever be thankful for all the support and advice from you and all the others who generously offer their time.
What you want to do is to boot from the windows CD, bypass the Recovery Console and proceed just like you where going to install windows EXCEPT at that point you just want to do a R for repair. You should back up any documents or pics that you don't want to lose although I have done this repair a few times and nothing was deleted.

If your afraid to proceed on your own, post here
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showforum=83
and the fine folks in that forum can help you along. Mention that I thought at this point that a XP Repair may be the way to go.

Good Luck,

Ken :D
