Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

Your HJT program is very outdated and not showing me the whole picture, do this…

Hijackthis 1.99.1
Its important that Hijackthis is installed in its own permanent folder for backup purposes.
  • Go to where you currently have HJT installed and delete the whole folder.
  • Use the link above or the links in my signature to download HJT 1.99.1 setup to your desktop
  • Double Click on the Setup icon and by defaut it will unzip to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
  • Please use the [external image: Posted Image] Button and not the New Topic Button
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Hi Ken,
Thanks so much for your help. I have done some things to my laptop since my last post - not sure if it matters. Most problems are still the same… I did find a message in the C: folder from AOL stating that I have malware and should use connfix. I did not do that yet. My problem all started when I tried to download AOL software. I normally use comcast cable but during outages I use AOL dialup as a backup. My AOL software stopped working so I tried to install/uninstall and then my problems started. Here is my new log:

I need to see the AVG report ( Important ) and a New HJT log please.
Hi Ken, Slight problem. I did not disable VirusScan and it blocked the AVG program executing repairs. I assume it should be turned off… I will run the scan again from safemode with VirusScan OFF. Kathy
Hi Kathy, Are you still having problems with AVG ?? I have never been a big fan of Mcafee so don't know to much about it, I know most AV programs have an option to disable it. You might try opening the program and look for an options tab. If it still loads in Safemode, you can right click on the McAfee icon in the system tray and disable the background feature. Let me know if this helps Ken :D
Hi Ken, You are right! After a second scan, I realized that even though I had disabled McAfee in regular windows I forgot to turn off the "resume on startup", so when I restarted in safemode it came back on. I will try again this morning… Kathy

Kathy, :D

Your log looks OK but the entries in AVG for Winhound could be bad. Lets check to see if its present.

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Do not run Option 2

Kathy,

You do have some of the Winhound Infection that falls into the Smitfraud family , lets run option 2 but do it this way. I know this is time consuming but hopefully this will get it and you should be back to normal shortly.

Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

  • Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart into normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Let me see the Smitfraud log, the AVG log and a New HJT log.
Ken,

I am still having problems on startup. I have messages as follows 1) windows installer preparing to install 2) Spyware Doctor cannot be found and 3) please wait while windows configures Office XP. Also, right after I enable VirusScan (only after I have finished with everything you suggest and after the previous messages) I receive the following message:

1/24/2007 10:24:41 PM Blocked by Access Protection rule NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exe \REGISTRY\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.com Anti-virus Standard Protection:Prevent hijacking of .EXE and other executable extensions Action blocked : Write

Also I found several strange text documents in my C: drive with extremely long text. This is just a tiny example (it is too long to copy - there are at least 5 such folders dated from the time my problem started):

Kathy,

Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Spyware Doctor. You can always reinstall it after your system is back to normal.

Your HJT log is fine, and AVG found nothing , it looks like Winhound is gone. Lets run the free online virus checker from Panda, it may show something that is hidden. If the Panda report is ok, I am going to direct you to some windows support sites for the other issues.

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
2. A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
Since you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
Save the log someplace.
12. reboot
13. Post Panda scan results in your next reply

Ken :D
Ken, I am unable to delete Spyware Doctor. It is no longer listed in the add/remove. There is a folder in my program files but it does not contain the uninstall icon. I am unable to delete the file because of some .dll. Panda report: Incident Status Location Spyware:Cookie/Go Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Kathy Zapp\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\mr79ause.default\cookies.txt[.go.com/] Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Kathy Zapp\Desktop\SmitfraudFix\Process.exe Potentially unwanted tool:Application/Processor Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Kathy Zapp\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.zip[SmitfraudFix/Process.exe] Spyware:Spyware/New.net Not disinfected C:\My Downloads\newnet.exe Adware:adware program Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\ss3unstl.exe
We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Boot to safemode and delete this.
This is what was bad from Panda
C:\My Downloads\newnet.exe

I will have to get back to you on the rest a little later this evening.
