My system is very slow on start up and on shutdown. It will hang and the task bar will not show up at times.
It has been running good until about 2 weeks ago. I have run spyware and ad ware programs and can't find any, I don't know anything else to do. I don't want to do a restore. I will be truly greatful for any help.

Hi jct883and welcome to Tom Coyote forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!
dan

Hi jct883

Not seeing too much in your log but would like to take some scans just to look a little deeper.
*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
________________

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Click on the Update icon at the top of the window

    • Wait for the update to download and install
  • Click on the Scanner icon at the top of the window
    • Click on the Settings tab then select Recommended Options and choose Quarantine
    • Click on the Scan tab
      • Select Complete System Scan. Ewido will now begin to scan your system
  • When the scan has completed, click on the Save Scan Report button and save the scan to your Desktop where it can be easily found
  • Copy and paste the scan results into your next post.

Dan, I can't get the program Kaspersky Online Scanner to work. Whenever I install Active x that's as far as it goes. I get a page telling about the product. Sorry, I got the rest to work.

I tried and the same thing happened. I am going to try to attach an image of what I get. Well I can't do that Now my task bar hangs and stays in the down position. Then it will operate fine and then hang again. I think I should just shoot this computer. Sure don't want to do a restore. Can I reinstall windows from my disk that came with the system. It says I have a newer version, which I think it is because I added SP2 to the system after I bought it. Will I loose all my programs if I reinstall the older versio and then add SP2 again? Thanks
Hi jct883
This problem is starting to seem more a software\ hardware related issue.

Try this panda scan:

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
- A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
- Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
- Save the log file to your desktop

Thanks dan

Hi jct883
Panda scan there is nothing to worry about just a few cookies it picked up.

Your log is clean well at least from malware, although appreciate your still having issues, this may well be hardware software related in which case I'm unable to assist you further you need to post to one of the many hardware software forums who have experts in this field to help you resolve your further issues quickly.
a couple of links you may find helpfull:
http://forum.computertrouble.co.uk/index.php
http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?

couple of things I want you to do to finish off, is to read and digest some of the following advise:
This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
regards dan
