Ok guys I've tried for a good 5 hours to remove this mofo and I've got no luck. I've run Registry Cleaner, CWShredder, AVG, ATF Cleaner, Spy-Bot and Ad-Aware and Smit-Rem Fix but I'm still getting pop-ups on my desktop every 3 mins or so. The ads are all from ads.k8l.info.

Ok my HijackThis! log goes like this.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

Please delete any HijackThis Folders and Files you have now.

There's a new version of HijackThis.

Click the "Save" button.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [Add Reply].
Heh I didnt know about that.. Ok here we go again.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [midofidu] C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB896428$\midofidu.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete this File if listed:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Man, after all that it was just 1 file? How come AVG. SpyBot, Ad-Aware and SmitFraud Fix couldn't get it? Anyway I think its clean unless you guys tell me otherwise. No pop-ups anymore. Thanks!

Btw, what's the rationale behind renaming the HijackThis! program file?

1. It shouldn't be showing in your HJT log.
2. The file, midofidu.exe isn't legit.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/…n/MS05-033.mspx

I'm not sure if this is a new route the bad guys are taking as this is the first time I've seen this.

Btw, what's the rationale behind renaming the HijackThis! program file?

There's some bad guys , Vundo infection, that hide the 02 and 020 entries in the HJT log. I didn't see any 020's in your log so it was worth a try.

Here's my normal clean speech

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Ok great. Thanks a mil mate! Will follow up on the recommendations. Oh and I was just checking out my usual bittorrent site to get my dose of TV shows and I accidentally clicked one of the banners, and all of a sudden there's this auto-download and I've got pop-ups left right and centre. Bad stuff man.

I guees I'd complain to the bittorrent site, but that's how they make money. Nice site isn't it.

Reboot and post a new HJT log AFTER you get those programs I suggested you get:

Spywareguard.
