Please help. It took me all day to remove unwanted malware and trojans. I was using AOL's virus program I think it was called Acive Antivirus. It was garbage. I realized that AVG free virus program was no longer going to be free so I was trying out the other program I mentioned for about 2 months. I kept keeping tojans. System restore kept turning off. My windows firewall was not working. I couldn't keep regedit open or use Hijack this until in safe mode. Got all that working now by downloading avast antivirus and avg spyware. I had ewido before updating cause it would not let me update on home page of programs, I had to do it through a mirror site. Avast found two trojans. One in puter file and one in memory. The one in memory was purityscan and the other was smitfraud. I was finally able to use Hijack this and here is my log. I don't understand what all these hosts are. Please help me to decide what I need to fix. Thanks. Here is my log. I am using xp.

  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Just a note to let you know when I ran the avg antispy scan the suggested action was ignore once but the button at the bottom that says to apply all actions was grayed and I could not do it.
Hi gertie,

Your doing well, don't know why the functions in AVG where greyed out ????

You can remove these with HJT, they are not critical but should be removed.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing :
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Once your system is clean, we suggest that you reverse this to keep critical windows files from accidently being deleted.

Look for and delete these.
If you can't delete any of them, you will have to boot to safemode to be able to remove them.

The rest of your log looks fine  How are things running now??
Ken thanks so much for all your help and speedy response. I know u guys don't get appreciated enough for all the time and energy u put in helping others at these forums. Personally I would like to thank u all so very much for your dedication. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't use my puter. Anyhow I was just a little curious about this line in my hijack this log. Earlier you said to delete it using Hijack This and when I did do the second scan it is back. Is that OK. R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost My puter is running awesome. If I have any problems I will be back to this forum as the service was great and friendly. Gertie :D
Good Morning,

Thank you for your kind words, the garbage these people write are getting harder and harder to remove, so you need to watch what you download and the sites you go into. I am providing a list of free tools for you to install that will help keep you more secure.

In reference to this,
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
Hoster just reset it correctly, nothing to worry about .

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
