Please Help!!!! I just finished cleaning my computer two days ago when I was working with Siggyx. I had a somewhat strange popup telling me I won a New Gateway computer, click here. I immediately ran the Ewido program and found several instances of the Trojan Smitfraud which we just tried to delete. I thought it was gone but all the instances were in my husband's I.E temporary files. He only browsed financial or other safe web sites and opened a few emails so we are at a loss as to why it returned or how we got infected again? I had not reinstall the host file from mvps. I ran Ewido in regular mode and did not save the log file which said it cleaned 20 some instances of trojan smitfraud. I rebooted and ran it again in safe mode…no infections. I then ran a hijackthis again. I hope someone can figure this out? Thanks in advance!

Hi Siggyx,

I thought maybe you were on a mini vacation but "crazy at work" is worse. Thanks for looking at this. I haven't had any popups just the notices from ewido (smithfraud), PANDA (Virtumundo) and now the CWShreader thing. Can't believe this is all on here. Here is the new log.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Hi… I already had Ewido on my computer and it had the most current update loaded today 9/25. The 15 day free trial ended a couple of days ago so I didn't want to uninstall it and try and download the setup file again just in case it would not let me do that. I ran the scan in safe mode and it found not a thing this time. I also ran Hijack this in safe mode…. I hope this was correct. Below are the two scans.

Hi… I just ran the panda online scan again and here are the results. It was the same information as the scan I ran on 9/19. Incident Status Location Spyware:spyware/virtumonde No disinfected Windows Registry
Please download Asquared from the link below.

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/

Safe it to your desktop. Next open and check for updates.

Boot to safe mode (tap f8 while bios loads)

Then scan your system (this will take some time) after the scan is compelte allow it to fix what it has found. If there is something that it can not clean please let me know what it was.

Then reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Hello… This morning I opened Spywareblaster to see if there were any updates and there were 12 restricted sites disabled. Most of them were coolwebsearch variants, one dialer, one red sheriff, one xupiter. I enabled them all again and clicked on update but there were no updates. When I returned to the status screen, the restricted 12 were again disabled. I don't know if I never really enabled the protection again or if when I tried to update something disabled them again. I rebooted the computer and checked spywareblaster again and tried to update but had no problem with anything being disabled. Since I ran a2squared last night we have only looked at few emails and have not done much surfing so I don't know what is going on. I am going to run the ewido again and see if anything appears.
" Follow these steps in to remove Smitfraud and restore your desktop.

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Step 1: Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if they are found: Security IGuard, Virtual Maid, and Search Maid. Once complete, exit the Add/Remove Programs window.

Step 2: View All Hidden Files on your computer; to do this: Open Windows Explorer, go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View and within hidden files and folders. Once you're there, checkmark 'Show hidden files and folders' and uncheck: 'Hide protected operating system files'.

Step 3: Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

Step 4: Once in Safe Mode, delete these files or directories. If the files / directories do not exist, do not be concerned.

C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid

C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

C:\Windows\Temp\icsupp95.exe

C:\Windows\taskmon.exe

Step 5: Reboot your computer. Your desktop should be restored, and the background may appear as black.

Step 6: In order to restore your desktop settings download smitfraud.reg (link below). Save this file to your desktop; once it's there, double click it and when Windows asks you to merge the data, click Yes.

Step 7: Reboot your computer. You should now be able to change your desktop settings back to how you would like it. If your desktop still looks strange, go into your display properties and click on the Themes tab. Change the theme to Windows XP and you will now be using the default Windows XP settings. Then change them as you see fit. "
Hello Siggyx. I followed the instructions but did not find any files to delete except the log folder. When I ran the smitfraud.reg, it did not ask me to merge any files. It only asked if I wanted to add the smitfraud to the registry. I am assuming this adds something to the registry to keep smitfraud off the computer. Should I be concerned that I was not asked to merge any files. I followed the instructions to reboot after that but didn't have to change anything on my desktop. I ran ewido again and there was nothing to correct. I then ran the panda online scan and it still says I have some virtumundo in the registry? Is this still a problem? Thanks for all the help. This post is getting long and I know it is a lot of work to constantly review it. I just hope that I have cleaned all those bad guys off this computer.
