Thanks so much.

Hi DavidNand welcome to Tom Coyote forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!
dan
Hi DavidN

Messenger Plus! (MessengerPlus2, MessengerPlus3) (MP) is an add-on for Microsoft's free messaging programs Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. It is a 'free' download (with a few stingers in its tail). MP includes an optional Sponsor Program provided by C2Media. The Sponsor Program is commonly known in the anti-spyware and adware world as 'Lop' or 'Lop.com'. There has been a problem since Messenger Plus! first started including the Sponsor Program in approximately May 2003, with users installing the Sponsor Program without understanding what the Sponsor Program is, what it does to a user's system, or the privacy implications involved.

Messenger Plus!, if installed to include the 'sponsor program', will install adware on your computer that generates pop up windows. The Sponsor Program will also change your home page, your search engine settings, place numerous links in IE favorites (including online casino and gambling links) and place more links on your desktop. The search toolbar that is installed cannot be turned off. The pop up advertising windows will appear even if you are running IE's pop-up blocker. This is because the Sponsor Program adds its advertisement URLs to the pop-up blocker exclusion list. If you want to reinstall MessengerPlus3, make sure you click "I refuse, do not install the sponsor program".

Please download LSP-Fix from the following link and save it to a location you can find later if necessary. Do not use this. See ***note below. I find to make things easy, is to save to the desktop, that way once finished with the tools we can find them easily and delete them.
LSP-Fix Download Link

Next we need to stop a couple of processes that are running on your computer

To do this…
Startup HJT and select the 4th button entitled
Open the misc tools section

Under where it says system tools click on
Open process manager

Now look for the following processes one by one in the list below, once you find them highlight them then click on the
killl process
button

C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! 3\MsgPlus.exe

You have multiple Infections which will take several posts to clear up.Your Infections have more than likely come from using p2p sites, I would suggest you remove them, again its your call.
When carrying out removal of new.net by add and remove programs, please incude the followiing programs:

ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard <======== I will update you with a newer version.
SaveNow
WeatherBug <======unless you really need this
MessengerPlus3
Blubster
INSTAFINK
CommonName
Ares <========Your call

Although NewDotNet does not claim to be spyware, it has been associated with computer instability in certain situations. Both SaveNow and NewDotNet have been linked for computer instability according to the MS Knowledge Base Article 302463.

For more information, please see the following:

What is SaveNow and/or New.Net?
Foistware: New Net, Inc. (NewDotNet) DLL

I recommend that you remove NewDotNet unless you deliberately installed it.
Please open Add/Remove programs and uninstall New.Net or NewDotNet. If it is not listed, follow these instructions:
  • From a computer that has Internet access, click on NewDotNet Removal
  • If you get
    the page cannot be displayed
when clicking on the removal link.
You may have winhelp's mvps hosts file installed, as www.newdotnet.com is a blocked site
  • Download and save uninstall6_90.exe (New.Net/Support/Uninstall exe file) to the Desktop.
  • Go to the Desktop and double-click on uninstall6_90.exe
  • Click on the OK button.
  • After removal, reboot.
***Note: If you cannot connect to the Internet after removing New.net, please run the LSP-Fix program I had you download earlier, and click on the finish button. Reboot and you should be able to get back on

_____________

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

please post a new HJT log and the smitfraud txt in your next reply.

Hi david, Still seeing in the log a few programs that I had put for deletion, can you let me know which you decided to keep! thanks dan
On the Add/Removed programs in the control panel. The following were not listed: —————————————————————————————————- SaveNow. I'm keeping WeatherBug. Blubster. INSTAFINK. CommonName. I got rid of Ares. ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard, you said you would give me an updated version, so I kept it. How do I get rid of, SaveNow, Blubster, INSTAFINK, and CommonName? Thanks. -David Nelson-
Hi david, thanks for letting me know, I have to work soon so should be back with you later. "ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard" can go, will address the others later. Thanks dan
Hi David

I would like to see an uninstall list.
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

[external image: Posted Image]

5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.
___________________________

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

Now lets check some settings on your system.
(2000/XP) Only
In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Please include new HJT log, fixwareout\report.txt and uninstall list
in your next post
Thanks dan

Hi David

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
Do not use yet!

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Hi David

Ok, we have a few things to tidy up from the kav scan.
Can you delete the smitfraud folders you downloaded at the begining and empty your recycle bin afterwards.
I will deal with items in system restore soon.

You can permanently delete the files in quarantine if you so desire.
Delete Norton files from Quarantine

Let's go ahead and delete those files from Quarantine.
WARNING: Do not do this unless you are sure that you do not need the files that are in Quarantine. Files removed from Quarantine are not placed in the Recycle bin. Removing files from Quarantine will permanently delete the files from the computer.
———————————-
Go to the section that describes your version of Norton AntiVirus and follow the steps.

To remove Norton AntiVirus 2006 files from Norton Quarantine and Restore
  • Start Norton AntiVirus.
  • If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program and click Norton AntiVirus.
  • In the left pane, click Reports.
  • Click View Norton Quarantined and Restore
  • In the left pane, select the type of risk that you want to remove.
  • In the right pane, select the files that you want to remove.
  • To select multiple items, press and hold down the Ctrl key while clicking the items that you want to select for deletion. To select everything in Quarantine, click the first item in the list, and then press Shift+End.
  • Click Delete Item.
  • When prompted "Warning! Are you sure that you want to remove this item from Quarantine," click Yes.
  • Close the Quarantine window, and then exit Norton AntiVirus.
